Well it was a right call because it is a RULE, but I agree the rule is kind of stupid.

The second I saw it, I expected them to call it a no-catch. That's the rule. I hate the rule, but they called it the way they've been calling it ever since the rule came in. Megatron won't make that mistake again.

but in the endzone - I think the rule should not be

how many RB's have you seen drop the ball as soon as they cross the line

terrible, whats worse is it robs us of great football moments. last second winning TDs catches dont just grow on trees. plus for a team like detroit that could have set the tone for the whole season, something like 'your going to have to fight us till the very end every game'

just terrible all around

That's a different play, but you're right. Once you've caught the ball and established possession with your feet down in the end zone, it should be a catch.

BTW, if that's the best the Bears have, we're gonna smash 'em next week.

Establishing posession is exactly what the rule is about and according to the rule it wasn't established.

Clarification needs to be made to the rule as far as how long this "process" goes on for.

Anyone else see that absolute rip-off TD taken away from the Lions?

Here is what happen:
  • The ball was caught
  • he had both feed in bounds
  • He was down (butt, knees, everything)
  • He turned over to get up and lets the ball go.
  • TD called
  • TD taken away because he didn't sit on the ground for five minutes before dropping the ball.

If you are running the ball in, the ball just has to break the plane of the goal line. You can even fumble 1 millisecond after it does, it's still a TD. If it's a catch, you had better have brought your tent, because it's going to be a long night before it becomes an accepted TD.

Yes, bad call. There's no defending it.

It was a TD, they reviewed it and took it away and Mike Pereira was on live during the game and said it was no TD.

That whole rule is a cluster ****.

I think it should work like it does in the field of play, down by contact. When a player is contacted by the defense and his knee touches down in the endzone, the play should be over at that moment. What the Lion receiver did after he was down by contact had no bearing on his controlling the pass. Tough break for the Lions.........

That's an example of where all you have to do is simply look at the play and CLEARLY see that was a catch, regardless of what the wording in the rulebook states. That was without a doubt a catch!

How hard is it for an official to simply look at a play and determine if it was a catch?

This rule was not in place during the NYG's SB run. Shockey is thrown the ball in the EZ....he has it in his hands, and both feet are on the ground for a millisecond before he's clocked. The ball comes out, I believe there was an INT.

To the eyeball test, this was an easy call.....no catch.

But the refs called it a TD.

We have too many lawyers in the league office now. It should've been pretty easy for the officials to say...."both feet inbounds....butt on ground...control of ball...down by contact...TD!"

Yet, they try to dissect and get cute with "legal" mumbo-jumbo.....Silly result!

Lions fans deserve an apology from the NFL.

No, you're wrong. The rule isn't about establishing possession, it's about "process" which is what makes this rule so stupid. (they even said this about 50 times during the game)

Establishing possession is a firm grasp on the ball and two feet in bounds. Established possession, is something he clearly had.

Established possession is how fumbles are determined.

You have to continue out the play if you go to the ground.

You have to maintain possession all through the entire motion of going to the ground.

IMO, he wasn't going to the ground any more. He was rolling over to get up.

Same thing happened to Todd Heap a few years ago. He caught a pass, landed with both feet. Got popped and when he landed on his back the ball popped out.

Last year in Oakland, I think it was Louis Murphy who caught a ball cleanly, went to the ground with possession but lost it as he was rolling over.

The rule is stupid.

Johnson wasn't going to the ground any more. He was getting up and I think that is what makes the play a TD.
