And other random thoughts after 3 games...
McCoy, Shipley and Brown... that's the Horns' new big three offensively, and I suspect we Horns fans will have a lot of fun watching them over the next couple-three years... congrats to Malcolm on his first 100 yard game (but don't EVER fumble again)...
If you want to know the Horns' identity this year, all you need to know is they've run the ball 142 times, thrown it just 66 times... that's nearly a 70/30 run to pass ratio...
And while we're on the subject, it sure looks to me like the Horns have a pretty fair offensive line this year, certainly better than last year's crew... 47 carries per game speaks to that, so does the 4.8 yard per carry average (an average that would be 5.0 if the NCAA didn't count sacks as rushing yardage lost)... speaking of sacks, the Horns have allowed two in 68 plays, both on Garrett Gilbert in the season opener...
Bottom line, the Horns have averaged over 33 points per game, nearly 70 plays per game, over 425 yards per game and 6.1 yards per play...
On the defensive side of the ball, the Horns have been quietly solid... they've allowed a little over 255 yards per game, 15 points per game, and 4.2 yards per play...
Of course, this is not the meat of their schedule, and a very good Sooners team lurks in the near future, along with the rest of the Big XII conference schedule... but neither UCLA nor BYU are dogs, and they've passed those tests... what has me encouraged has been the offensive line play, and I think they can carry that over into the big games...
In conclusion, I have to tell you folks that it's damn near eerie how often Case makes a play that reminds you of Colt (like that incredible scramble near the end of the first half to make a big play), and how often Jaxon makes one that calls up the image of Jordan (like his 5 yard TD pass on the option)...
I wonder if there are any more boys in those two families??
They have come together nicely so far this year, but I wonder if this very young team is ready for the Red River Rivalry... I don't see this edition of the Horns as national championship caliber, but I see the nucleus of a young team that might make a championship run or two in the not too distant future (particularly if the Horns continue recruiting as well as they have in recent years)...
Right now, my optimistic hope is that Mack starts another string of 10 win seasons... I think that's doable...
