And other random thoughts after 3 games...

McCoy, Shipley and Brown... that's the Horns' new big three offensively, and I suspect we Horns fans will have a lot of fun watching them over the next couple-three years... congrats to Malcolm on his first 100 yard game (but don't EVER fumble again)...

If you want to know the Horns' identity this year, all you need to know is they've run the ball 142 times, thrown it just 66 times... that's nearly a 70/30 run to pass ratio...

And while we're on the subject, it sure looks to me like the Horns have a pretty fair offensive line this year, certainly better than last year's crew... 47 carries per game speaks to that, so does the 4.8 yard per carry average (an average that would be 5.0 if the NCAA didn't count sacks as rushing yardage lost)... speaking of sacks, the Horns have allowed two in 68 plays, both on Garrett Gilbert in the season opener...

Bottom line, the Horns have averaged over 33 points per game, nearly 70 plays per game, over 425 yards per game and 6.1 yards per play...

On the defensive side of the ball, the Horns have been quietly solid... they've allowed a little over 255 yards per game, 15 points per game, and 4.2 yards per play...

Of course, this is not the meat of their schedule, and a very good Sooners team lurks in the near future, along with the rest of the Big XII conference schedule... but neither UCLA nor BYU are dogs, and they've passed those tests... what has me encouraged has been the offensive line play, and I think they can carry that over into the big games...

In conclusion, I have to tell you folks that it's damn near eerie how often Case makes a play that reminds you of Colt (like that incredible scramble near the end of the first half to make a big play), and how often Jaxon makes one that calls up the image of Jordan (like his 5 yard TD pass on the option)...

I wonder if there are any more boys in those two families?? :D

They have come together nicely so far this year, but I wonder if this very young team is ready for the Red River Rivalry... I don't see this edition of the Horns as national championship caliber, but I see the nucleus of a young team that might make a championship run or two in the not too distant future (particularly if the Horns continue recruiting as well as they have in recent years)...

Right now, my optimistic hope is that Mack starts another string of 10 win seasons... I think that's doable...

Excellent post, SB. Insightful and intelligent.

Easy to understand why you're a Longhorns fan. ;)

edit: BTW, can we please stop calling it the RRR? So sick and tired of being a politically correct nation of wimps.

I can give you the precise date that happened-- January 1st, 1964... I was 11 years old...

That was when the top-ranked Horns met second-ranked Navy (led by Roger Staubach) in the Cotton Bowl... the family had spent the night at a friend's house in El Paso, and we all gathered around to watch the game the next day... Dad was a soldier, so felt inclined to root against Navy, and we all rooted for the Horns...

Final-- Texas 28, Navy 6... it was a great day, and a Horns fan was created...

I have lots of mixed emotions about my Horns so far, mostly due to all the young players.
very excited about Brown and Shipley, not so much about McCoy. I'm actually scared for McCoy to take a big shot and he seems to have fairly weak arm. Wish Mack would have put Brown back in the game right after the fumble since he is the starting tailback now. Right now our Oline is improved but still weak. Our interior Dline is just terrible. Our receivers can't seem to get open at all without a trick play or a McCoy scramble being involved. That absolutely has to change. Our Dbacks haven't been tested at all. Our kick returns are bad and kickoff coverage is horrible. I predicted 4 or 5 losses this year and thought UCLA would be one of them but UCLA is freaking terrible and their coach is just waiting to get fired.
I'm excited about the new strength and conditioning coach, hopefully by next year we'll see the benefits. We are playing loads of young guys and we'll take our lumps but the future looks good and the most important thing is Greg Davis is gone and we have a Ocoord. that realizes that the tight end is a position that is actually allowed to catch a pass.

I was very happy with the play of the Horns, there are many young guys stepping up and playing very well. McCoy does not have a big arm so what neither did his brother but the guy can make quick reads and get the ball there on target. Texas now adds a power running game, yes I like where Texas is and where they are headed and should only improve as these 1st and 2nd year guys gain more experiance.

Im not feeling McCoy at this point.

He has the definition of a noodle arm and if he has to throw in tight coverage he's going to have some bad days.

Had Gilbert lived up to the hype Texas would've been a top 10 team this year because suprisingly they got a solid squad.

They just don't have a lot at the QB position.

Im very impressed with the new coaches though.

The problem is, at this point the Horns will be vulnerable to any defense that can stop the running game... when that happens, they'd better hope that the defense plays really well, or they're toast...

To be honest, though, I didn't expect them to be looking this good, this early... I'm pleased so far...

I don't think that is the case I think Texas running game will continue to improve. I think Brown is a very good power back and along with some backs like Fozzy who is a change of pace I fully expect to see Texas offense become more balanced than we have seen in many years.
