Big Metallica fan here. What are your thoughts on the band as of right now? What are your favorite albums? Favorite Songs?

I think Death Magnetic was very good. Closest to the old Metallica you'll get. I like St. Anger though and I really like ReLoad. It's different Metallica but it's still good.

Except for some cover songs, everything after the black album sucked.

Old metallica is the best metallica and the best metallica was the first couple which you can still here the influence Dave Mustaine had at that time.

I bought load when it first came out, listened to it twice, realized they cut the title short as it should have been called load of crap and so I sold it the next day.

Had a friend that bought some of their cds after that and I listened to them and still thought they sucked and the stuff where they tried to recapture the old style was pale in comparison to their old stuff.

So...unless they put out cover tunes, I just won't buy anything else from them.

Which is sad as they were one of, if not the best, bands going in that genre before they cut their hair and tried to change too much...now they have lost their roots and can't get them back.

They sucked compared to the old days, yes I can agree with that but it is still good metal. May not be as good but it is still good.

Nah...I just can't even consider it good metal any more.

I mean Motley Crue had that one CD with a different singer. It was not anything remotely close to what Motlery Crue was normally like. But it was really some pretty good music on there and probably would have done well if it was from another band.

The stuff from metallica was not just a change, it just was not good.

But that is just my opinion and to each it's own.

Yeah I understand but it's just that you still think Metallica is the God of Metal so you don't listen to anything else. At least that's what I think. LOL. The only other Metal band I listen to is Free Reign. Only 5 songs, but they're good songs.

:laugh2: You only listen to one other metal band and free reign at that...that explains a great deal of things.

You should look into early Megadeth. Some of the current stuff is ok as well but the older stuff is really raw and wicked.

Since you are young you might not know that Dave Mustaine (singer/guitarist) for megadeth was the former lead guitar in Metallica and is responsible for some of the songs from the first couple of Metallic albums...and over all he is ten times the guitar player compared to Kurt...not that kurt is bad, Dave is just that much better IMO.

I would advise you to find a friend, download or however you can get it...to try to listen to Peace Sells album/cd for it's just raw brutal guitars and sound. I would also suggest you get the rust in peace CD as it has some of the best overall thrash metal guitar works in the genre...really good guitar stuff on there.

I was thinking about making a Metallica sucks thread today on the subway. I say this because I have Kill'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice for All, and Black on my phone. I added Death Magnetic and dropped it into the shuffle mix so I could listen to it. Everytime a Death Magnetic song comes on, I have to forward past it because it is so damn horrendous.

Basically I'm with BP. Pretty much everything after Black sucks.

I will say this, King Nothing off the Load album is one of my favorite all time Metallica song. That song just straight kicks ***.

Black and all albums prior to Black I like just about every song on the albums.

This Death Magnetic and St Anger are absolute ****. Metallica needs to shut it down and retire. I tend to think most of their best creativity came from their bassist. (Cliff and Jason) I think Jason left because ***head Lars and James were removing Jason from the creative mix. He left because he wanted to play his music not their ****.

Todays Metallica = FAIL

No way...and the Black album might be the best selling one but it is not even close to the best all time from Metallica.

Given the choice I would take any of the previous cds over the black album.

The black album, while still good, was the start of the sell out or change if you will of metallica. It was the start of the end IMO.

And Justice for all was the most technical guitar work for them so it is the best in that area.

The earlier stuff had much more energy and young rawness to it and some great songs.

There are only two areas where the black album was better at. Recording quality and sells.

I don't think Jason ever had much of a input into the band. I think in one interview they basically came out and said that they treated him as a replacement and never really treated him as well as they should. And that is the reason why they gave the newer guy Trujillo (sp?) so much up front music. Trujillo is a pretty good bassists, I would say easily better than jason and loved his stuff on the old infectious grooves stuff. Can't say much about his work with suicidal as frankly I never really liked them because of the lame singing/talking style the singer used with that band. He seemed to changed that a great deal with infectious grooves though.

However you are right about Cliff...I should have named him as well as he was a big influence on their early stuff.

Whoa.

My favorite metal is thump and crunch metal. Stuff that isn't super fast, but heavy as hell like Enter Sandman. Don't get me wrong it can be fast too. I love Damage Inc. you see :)

Here is some stuff to check out if you like the same type of stuff.

Slayer: South of Heaven, Season in the Abyss. (There are actually three (Reign in Blood) but that one is really fast and doesn't have as much crunch to it) When Dave Lombardo left, Slayer went to ****.

Pantera: Just hit Youtube, they have a lot of stuff.

Slipknot: Checkout Psychosocial I freaking love that song.

Others, Disturbed (first album), Godsmack, Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down, Tool. There is tons of good stuff out there.

Well, I knew they treated him like crap, but I figured he had some major influence because of the extreme change they underwent between Master of Puppets and ...and Justice for All. It was a night and day change in sound.

I remember, I was taken back by Justice when I first heard it. It wasn't like any Metallica I ever heard. I remember several of my friends hated it early on.
