...Parcells said it right after the game that day. He told the media that on Monday morning of that week he instructed Zimmer that "Steve Smith will not beat us". Parcells with the obvious help of his staff then went out and crafted an excellent game-plan to totally shut down and frustrate one of the best WRs in the game today.

Special props to Newman for everything he did in that game to shut Smith down with some help from the rest of our defense.

That performance should be considered one of the best defensive game plans and executions of the year, especially when you see how Smith torched the so-called "GREAT" Bears defense today.

I get frustrated with Parcells at times, but one thing you can't ever deny with him...The Man knows defense.

I can't wait to see our unit next year as the young guys and some more new additions mature and really crank up the pressure!!

...that and divine intervention when Cundiff missed his FG attempt. :D

Parcells could've very well given those instructions. However, if you watch the game again, you'll see that Smith was definitely open several times, but for whatever reason, Delhomme wasn't looking his way. Not to take anything away from the gameplan or our defensive players, but we didn't shut Smith down as the stats may indicate. As I said, for whatever reason, the QB chose to throw to other WRs. They could've easily forced the ball to Smith in that game as they did in the Giants and Bears games, particularly those short routes.

he was shut down and then got tossed.

you fail to credit the "coverage" for Jake looking away. maybe he was confused by the coverage which took away ths sure thing.

I understand that, but Delhomme not seeing him had a lot to do with what we were doing and Delhomme didn't feel comfortable enough to stay in the pocket and find him, (i.e. DeMarcus Ware's pressure).

Actually on a couple of those plays the safety, (Davis, I think) was sneaking around and Smith wasn't as open as it may have looked on replay.

Whatever happened in that game, it certainly changed Carolina's approach. Since that game, Carolina has made it a point to get Smith the ball no matter what the opponent is doing defensively.

Wonder if it had anything to do with Carolina watching us play Washington? Lol.

Not to take away anything from TNew, but having safety help on every play didn't hurt any.

This says it all to me:

He didn't have safety help on every play. He wasn't covering Smith on every play, either. And when there was a safety deep, it often was WAY deep.

Parcells didnt win that game....He said it himself Game plans are overrated.

I would assume he makes game plans for every big game player, what makes this any different?

The difference here was Julius Jones and some terrible call by the officials. Ok it wasnt terrible, but as a Football fan Dallas didnt deserve that second shot.

I would say the heat Zimmer and the defense as a whole takes really boggles me. The Bears DC is being interviewed all over we here consider him a guru it seems yet he allowed 1 guy to annihilate them and knock them from the playoffs.

We had Smith frustrated and he got himself tossed. We contained him.

We won on the road.

The game plan did something no one has done all year so I would say the gameplan was a very good one. We beat Carolina onthe road something few teams can say.

If every team doesn't go into a game against Carolina wanting to keep Steve Smith from beating them then they're idiots. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Smith is their primary weapon.
I''m just amazed at how many times he's able to burn teams. You double him and they don't have a whole lot else.

We beat Carolina in Carolina cause we came up with a good game plan against Smith & we executed it to a T. We didn't expect to keep Smith w/o any catches but to limit his effectiveness to make the BIG plays. He made a few catches but we had pretty good coverage on him & physically attacked him whenever we got the chance. He was ejected from the game because he was so upset with all the hard hits he taking from Williams, Davis & Newman.

:hammer: I was thinking the same thing watching that game yesterday. Looked to me like we played a pretty basic cover 2 most of the day against Carolina, just like the Bears do. Sure, we shaded a safety over, but do you think the Bears never did that? Every team knows what a great player Smith is, yet they still can't stop him. We did it, and our D and especially our corners deserve a lot of credit for it.

Also gotta agree that -- even though I don't mind the Bears -- it was nice to see those ridiculous comparisons to the 85 Bears defense get blown to smithereens. And their vaunted corners exposed just a little.
