Brian Schottenheimer is now the 10th head coach in Cowboys history. I find it very interesting who was the first player the Cowboys selected in the draft to start each head coach’s era. It’s also very interesting how often those picks ended up being somewhat representative of that head coach’s time in Big D.

FIRST PLAYER SELECTED IN EACH FORMER HC’s FIRST DRAFT
  • Tom Landry: Bob Lilly
  • Jimmy Johnson: Troy Aikman
  • Barry Switzer: Shante Carver
  • Chan Gailey: Greg Ellis
  • Dave Campo: Dwayne Goodrich
  • Bill Parcells: Terence Newman
  • Wade Phillips: Anthony Spencer
  • Jason Garrett: Tyron Smith
  • Mike McCarthy: CeeDee Lamb
The two Hall of Fame head coaches in Cowboys history - Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson - both drafted a future HOF player in their first draft. Landry with the great Bob Lily, and Jimmy with the unbelievably accurate Troy Aikman. Granted, they both benefitted from having the first pick in the draft.

You can also see one of the worst starts to a HC’s era in Dallas with the 2000 draft of Dwayne Goodrich under Dave Campo.

So as the Brian Schottenheimer era begins, it will be interesting to see if begins with the entrance of someone special or not.

Late Edit: Bill Parcells was also a HOF HC who coached the Cowboys. But he earned that from his time in NY and NE, not Dallas.

I hope our first round pick is a “cold weather” specialist kicker or a solid special teams player like Jerry dedicated the entire 2008 draft to.

As far as Ol’ Schotty goes, I can’t help but think of the great Eisenhower’s words to the troops in England on the eve of DDay: “And may God be with you”.

If we had this forum back then, most would have said Bob and Troy were over rated and we should have traded down. Add the round and pick for each of the players listed, thay may give us some more insight

Overwhelmingly Defensive picks. And may just be adding Mykel Williams to this list.

Interesting list.

Good stuff as always Bob. Well done.
I’d only add that Parcells HOF career included his stints at NY Jets and Dallas.

Bill is only HC in NFL history to lead 3 different teams to a conference champ game ( Giants, Pats, Jets) and lead 4 different teams to the playoffs ( Giants, Pats, Jets & Cowboys).

Parcells resurrected the Cowboys from one of our lowest points in Cowboys history following 3 consecutive 5-11 seasons setting us up for a more competitive playoff contender despite not going deeper in playoffs.

To be fair there was criticism even in our glory eras as well as gratitude. It should always go both ways.

Fans are more than willing to celebrate their teams success when applicable .

Only in amateur sports should we be more celebratory without more success as in many cases they are our children, neighbors, etc participating and our Alma maters.

Professional sports falls in a sharply different contrast of situation for fans expectations.

Garrett was very involved in the draft due to his dad being a scout. And insiders have said identifying talent was one of his strengths.
And his drafts were best since Bill eventually propelling us back to more of a playoff contender. Unfortunately we still had meddling and undermining from Jethro.
