The Super Three: Canty, Ware, Spears

You can't really ask Canty or Spears to pressure the QB. That's not their role.

Ware, though... he's got to improve, but it's his second season. I'd say he's right where he should be at this point in his career. Remember, the guy was a down lineman for his entire college career.

Canty and Spears are doing their job. You are right.

Regarding Ware, I think we should all remember that if a receiver is put on Ware's side, particularly a TE, it is his job to go into coverage. Rushing him in these situations is tantamount to a blitz.

Canty and Spears were never great pass-rushers in college. If they had 8 sacks between them for a full season I'd be shocked.

Depends on how you define great. Spears had 9 sacks as a Sr, and 6 his Jr Year when Canty as a Jr also had added another 4 sacks. So the pair combined for 10 and 11 sacks in there Jr and Sr years respectively. As most know, Canty missed a majority of his Sr. season.

While Canty was never considered a pass rusher, Spears was consider a good, not great pass rusher. The take on him coming out of college was he would be a good bull rusher with a decent swim and rip mover but would never be an edge rusher. I'm a little surprised that Spears has not been a more effective pass rusher as his college stats would indicate. I watched him a lot a LSU, and he was doubled a majority of the time.

Denver lost that game for other reasons as well.....

They couldn't cover Reggie Wayne (10 catches, 138 yards, 3 TD's)
They couldn't stop Joseph Addai (5.5 ypc)
They lost the turnover battle (forced 0 to's, fumbled the ball once)

I only saw the last qtr. and they had NO pressure on Manning. He literally picked them apart (many of the Wayne catches by the way). There was 1 turnover in the game total, so that's a bogus point. Of course TO's and stopping the run are important, I never claimed otherwise. If you don't pressure though, Peyton will be unstoppable.

Blitzing is sending more players then there are blockers either on the line or in an area on the line. Everytime we send a LB it is not necessarily a blitz.

They are expected to push the pocket and get a handful of sacks a year. Just ask Parcells. They both have been disappointing in this area. Luis Castillo was taken after Spears and he gets a lot more push and has 3 sacks this season so far.

They have been so low key this season sometimes they just blend into the scrum.
The Boys' rushing defense is good. Very good. But maybe we have Canty, Ware and Spears so busy trying to wall up the rush that they are not being used as pass rushers or Haley-like stalkers of the QB.
Those three are talented. They are forces waiting to be unleashed fully.
I like Zimmer but wonder if that is a part of the D that is not working. And maybe he should adjust.

You know watching Ware I get the feeling there is another button that needs to get pushed with him.

Sometimes I wish Parcells would push him more...especially during the crucial part of the games.

I think Ware can be a difference maker late in games but for whatever reason he sometimes is not.

Haley was such a clutch player for us and he really rose to the occasion when we needed pressure on the qb....Ware can do that.
