Nate "the kitchen" Newton was elected to the Black College Football Hall of Fame 2022 Class. I remember when Newton came out of FAMU and his brother Tim was a DT at FL and played for the Vikings. He was as dominate at FAMU as he was with the Cowboys and showed quickly as a USFL player he could be a Pro OL.

6-3-335 was not his weight at FAMU. He came out FAMU 6-3-265 rated as the no.17 OG out of college for the 1983 draft by Mel Kiper (drafted by Washington and cut). He had a 5.05 40yd time. I saw him play and always thought he would be a Cowboy because he reminded me of Herb Scott. However, when he came from his USFL stint with the Tampa Bay Bandits, he was 6-3-335 but still could run like a FB a position he played in high school until he grew out of it and became a OL/DL.

I was to go to FAMU out of High School in 1981 and would have been his classmate. However, life keep me in LA. But, I would have had a ball verbally going at him as he was known as verbal bully at FAMU besides being an All MEAC All American OL.

But, It was John Wooten, the scout, Director of Pro Personnel, and former OG that got Bob Ackles and Gil Brandt to redesign the Cowboys OL with bigger, stronger, mobile players starting with adding THE KITCHEN. Tex Schramm told Jimmy Johnson he ate himself out the NFL. But Wooten told Tony Wise to work with him. Wise remembered Nate from FAMU and loved his size, strength, speed, and quickness that saved his career and developed him into a Pro Bowl All Pro OL.

Congrats Nate "the kitchen" Newton.
