I know it was ugly. I know the penalties suck. I know the play calling sucked. I know the red zone sucks. But…that’s a game they don’t win a few years ago. Big Mike is a whipping boy right now but I do think the team is tougher since he got here. Thoughts?

They beat this same team in this same stadium by the same score on a last-second FG two years ago.

They won all sorts of games like this a few years ago. Just to pick one, NO in 2019: Dallas commits 8 penalties, turns it over twice, and still beats the 10-1 Saints by 3 points.

This was a big win no matter what. 4-2 is always better than 3-3. This team has loads of problems. All NFL teams do to varying degrees. The real question comes down to whether or not this team can get better or just tread the water they’ve been treading.

We as fans tend to look at a game and over value the score difference, the “style points”, the gaudy stats; in short we tend to value the wrong things. Really good football teams that win playoff games (plural) are tough, can impose their will at important moments in a game, can control the los, overcome adversity, learn to play together as a team and not a bunch of individuals, and make and accept zero excuses.

When a Cowboys team can do most of the above, we will know. We haven’t seen it in a long time. We’re all waiting and hoping for it but I haven’t seen it yet.

If you’re asking is the team better under Mike than garret. The answer is absolutely yes.

I tend to look at strength of opposition when evaluating our team in both wins and losses.

the Chargers had the 31st ranked pass defense in the league and a team that has SB aspirations should be able to hang a lot of yards and points on them

Only 2 touchdowns and needing a last minute field goal to beat a team that had been held to only 17 points doesn’t scream “Confidence” to me.

If a fan is happy with just winning games in the regular season and hanging their hat on that, it’s fine, but some of us here want to see a team capable of contending for a Championship.

Im waiting with bated breath for the 5 game stand we have against the Seahawks, Eagles, Dolphins, Bills and Lions. The rubber meets the road right there, Jack.

Well, if the definition of "contending" is reaching the CCG, then only 4 of 32 NFL teams earn the privilege of breathing that rarified air each season. And 28 don't. Two consecutive 12-5 seasons put this team in "contention" for that in '21 & '22, necessarily involving winning some slightly-ugly games along the way. I'm fine with staying competitive and in the hunt..especially on the road...preferring to learn lessons from wins, rather than from losses.

When the season is over, there is only 1 "winner" and 31 "losers", right? Longish odds in any given year.

As evidenced by their deep runs into the playoffs? This team hasn't achieved any new heights, and when MM walked in the door he had a helluva OL, now? Not so much. DQ did bring a nice D though.

It’s not like Dallas hasn’t blown teams out this year too. Good teams win by double digits and close fought, ugly games as well. Of course it is disconcerting to be outclassed by one of the worst and one of the best teams in the NFL in the same year, but still.

The defining characteristics of strong teams are:
  • They win a lot of blowouts
  • They don't get blown out
They don't win the close ugly games at a particularly high rate: winning percentage for all teams tends toward .500 as the games get closer, which is really just common sense. Teams don't go undefeated, so what kinds of games do the best teams lose? They lose close ugly games where they let inferior teams hang around and a few breaks go against them. The 49ers lost because they missed a FG. The Eagles missed a FG too and gave the ball away 4 times and still lost by only 6. The Giants came within one play of beating the Bills.

Getting blown out is a real red flag. Strong teams just don't lose the way Dallas did to SF and ARI. Okay, maybe once a season or so, but you have a few of those games and you can be certain you aren't that good.

The Vikings racked up a bunch of close wins last year. It got them a gaudy record and a ticket to the playoffs. But they were a bad team that got lucky, and they got exposed by better competition (Dallas) and their luck ran out (NYG).

What did your strength of opposition meter tell you when the 49ers loss to the Browns and the Eagles loss to a Jets team missing starters.....

The same Jets team we blew out with their starters in except Rodgers.

there’s not an issue with the wins….it’s how they win and who they beat.

That’s part of how one formulates an opinion of how they will fare in the playoffs, especially when there’s a Niners team that’s gotten better waiting to put the meat to them….again

Last years 12 win season was an impressive number, on its face, but anybody who saw the games knew our WR corp was inadequate and we were wildly inconsistent , even against bad teams.

the ending wrote itself and some of us are seeing that same inconsistency this season too…

The Niners lost Deebo and McCafree against a top 3 Browns defense and lost by 2 points
Eagles lost to the Jets by 6

Cowboys lost to the Niners by 32 points on National TV and to the (1-5) Cardinals by 12

Are you serious?

you should work for Jerry’s PR department.

A couple oddities from last night.

Two years ago the Cowboys played the Chargers in SoFi: there were 20 combined penalties (like last night) and Dallas won 20-17 (same).
Parsons also had the sack on Herbert to ice the game. That was his first action on the Dline.

It's funny how you talk about how the 49ers loss this person or that person.... but you've never brought up the fact that we haven't had a complete healthy offensive line in damn near 2 years when you bring up things concerning our offense.

I noticed how you didn't go into too many details of how the Eagles loss to a Jets team who were missing starters in that game.

The same Jets team we blew out WITH those starters minus Aaron Rodgers.

You should work for a construction company because your arms and shoulders are strong as he'll from lifting them goal posts.
