What things have you learned to fix on the Internet that saved you from calling in a professional?

  • I have a Samsung 46" DLP TV. The color wheel shattered and I bought a new one at PartsStore.com and found a Youtube video that walked me through it. The repair service wanted $549 to replace it. Repair time, about 1 hour 15 minutes parts cost. $139.
  • LG Tromm front loading washer: The sensor assembly went bad. It wouldn't spin or drain. The repair man wanted $350, I bought the sensor online and changed it using a howto I found on the net. Repair time: 30 minutes parts cost. $21.
  • 3-Way switch: Replacing switches is easy, but after 15 minutes trying to get a 3-way switch to function correctly, I had to look that one up too. Repair time after looking it up the proper wiring. 2 minutes. :)

I've done other stuff too, (installed garbage disposal, etc) though I didn't use the Internet to do those. I will probably replace my garbage disposal in my current home soon. My wife had never had a disposal before. She was throwing food away in the trash and I said toss it in the disposal so it doesn't stink up the trash. ...and she did. Including a banana peel which if I had known she would attempt that, I would have warned her not too!

changing out a flat tire,

tons of computer issues

replacing tiles in the kitchen, removing an old divider, buy new drywall, prep, sand, paint, also moving electrical outlets.

I'm planning on eventually removing the bedrooms closet doors, and replacing them with the folding / sliding ones (not sure which one i want though). I've seen videos on it, so it doesn't look too bad, but just haven't had any time yet.

Wow. Where can I begin? I've learned a lot of things off the internet mainly in forums such as these for car owners.

I think I've learned more on the Internet than I have in formal education. Most recently I guess was replacing a laptop LCD. 100$ and 15 minutes.

I dropped my cell phone in the toliet and learned that if you put it in a airtight bag of rice it will suck all of the moisture out of it.
It worked too!

It's probably important to note (at least for some) that it's uncooked rice. :laugh2:

Just about all the work I've done around my house has been through learning on the net.

Putting down hardwood flooring in the entire house, changing the garbage disposal, fixing a leaking kichen sink, repairing a gas fire place, changing out a light assembly in one of the bedrooms, replacing light switches in the kids and my mom's bedroom to ones with sensors so they will turn off when there is no movement.

Probably a lot more that I cant think of just now.
