The Americans defeated the best Olympic team in history (at that point in time, the 1976 Russian team was better but it's a minor quibble), but not the best team in history to that point.

The 1972 Summit Series Canadian team and the 1976 Canada Cup Canadian teams were much better.

Since that point in time there have been many teams assembled better than any of the squads mentioned above, but that's to be expected of course.

It was by far the greatest upset in the history of sports. No question about it. The Soviet team has not lost in 20 years and just beat the Americans two weeks prior. People also forget that this Soviet team trounce the NHL All Star team also.
