There are no words for how this defense played, but the offense has a lot to clean up. They left a lot on the field and I can’t even imagine what it will look like if they reach their potential along with the defense.

- Let’s start with Dak. Compared to last year he only had 3 games with a worse QBR, so statistically this was a pretty bad game for him (54% comp, 146yds, 72 QBR…). I’m not sure how to feel about that. The weather likely had an impact (judging from Rush’s lone throw). There were a couple drops, but compared to Daniel Jones and Mahomes, Dak can’t really complain about that. Still TBD if this new offense has had a positive impact on him.

- Biadasz struggled a lot today, but that interior D Line is rare. I expect him to clean it up. I’m starting to wonder if we will extend him or not. That may be our #1 need going into 2024…

- Chuma did well, but he’s not Tyler Smith. When we get Tyler this run game is gonna take another step forward.

- The receivers looked annoyed all game because they were owning those CBs, but I’m guessing the rain and the early lead dictated more on the run game. In closer games and better conditions I expect them to shine

- TEs looked bad today. Ferg with two drops and Hendy with the easy TD drop. We might end up with Schoonmaker as the #1 TE by end of season after all. TE group needs to clean it up

They better have a lot more in the tank cause the offense looked like it was on E all night! This will not fly when we face teams with actual competence. I’m very very proud of them tonight but that offense was very concerning from all standpoints.

I think you were right on about the WR’s and TE’s. Add Tyler Smith being out, the rain, and the D dictating the pace, and collectively, they probably took 6-8 completions , 200 yards, and 10-15 points off Dak’s totals…

I’m not a huge Dak fan but he played well enough tonight. If you add in those easy drops and two TD’s, the final stats look much different. It isn’t easy to throw in the rain, much less catch. Dallas went vanilla in the second half but this offense is about to take off IMO. I liked what I saw on O, just need to get a few more games in them under better conditions.

It was pouring rain all night. What are yall complaining about the Offense?

SMH
I’m not complaining. I’m marveling that we won 40-0 in conditions that should and sorta did result in artificially poor offensive play in both sides.

The point is we did that WHILE not playing our best on offense, so what does it look like when we do? I think that’s gonna be fun to watch

See, us homers have absolutely no problem with COWBOYS fans like you. Dak didn't make any mistakes to put our defense in a bad position. The offense drove the bus tonight. Nothing wrong with that.

Nice post, brother. ;)

The weather played a role in how the offense played. The big difference between McCarthy and Moore was McCarthy understood that the offense didn’t need to win tonight; instead the just needed not to lose, which meant taking care of the football. No unnecessary risks since the game was in the bag.

We’ll likely see another game where the offense needs to win the game, but in the weather conditions tonight, the Cowboys got 4 turnovers, plus a blocked punt. But the offense didn’t turn it over, and had three rushing TD’s to go with the two TD’s produced on defense and special teams.

Recipe for winning in the rain:

  • Protect the ball with no turnovers on offense - check
  • Cause turnovers on defense - check
  • Play good special teams - check
  • Run the ball on offense and score - check

Biadasz did have that big time heads up fumble recovery in the red zone

They did what was necessary. You’re not going to always have 30 offensive points.

Game play and weather kinda limited them.

It'll be interesting to see how they play next week against a much better NY team.

I wouldn't worry about the Dak from this game. Limited numbers because of the limited need to pass because of dominant defensive play from the git go, poor passing conditions, and big drops by TEs.

Here are the reasons why I am not worried about the offense .... yet.
  1. Most of our starters didn't play a single snap in preseason
    • Yes, this matters. All but a few offenses this week looked less than impressive.
    • The current trend of having starters sit out of all preseason is going to make offenses starting off slow the "new-norm".
  2. The weather sucked
    • Their offense had 3 turnovers, we had none.
      • While neither was explosive, at least our offense took care of the ball in conditions that usually help cause them
    • One offensive line was demolished, giving up "only" 7 sacks. While the other one, which was missing a starter, gave up none
  3. Dropped balls were an issue
    • Apparently it was hard for either team to catch perfectly passed balls by Dak and Jones
    • Our TEs dropped 2 TDs by themselves
  4. Our Top-3 rushers all had over 4 YPC
    • And we had 3 Rushing TDs
    • Again, with less than a 100% healthy OLine, on top of that
  5. Because of ST and Def Scores, the Cowboys easily lost the TOP battle
    • And despite a 26.5 vs 33.5 TOP differential, the Cowboys offense almost had 100 yard more of total offense
    • Not only that, they almost doubled the average yards-per-play (4.8 vs 2.6)
  6. Despite all that, the offense lead the team to 27 of the 40 points
    • That still would have been the 7th highest score total in Week 1
    • Going back to #1, 19 teams failed to score more than 21 points in Week 1
      • To say most offenses started off slow this week is an understatement

So really, outside the TEs who only caught 2 passes in 8 targets (25%) from Dak, the offense wasn't all that bad. The rest of the offense caught 11 of 16 targets (68.75%) from Dak. Then add another 108 yards at 4.7 ypc on the ground by the 1st team offense.

So it was really just one position group that clearly let the offense down.

And just look at Rush's only pass attempt to Tolbert that may have been 30 feet over his head, and I think we can give the passing O a little bit of a break.

Afterall, 27 points in that type weather is still pretty good.

Anyways. JMHO.

You can't really judge those conditions too closely but there seemed a gap in quality between Cooks/Lamb and then Ferguson/Tolbert/Gallup. Maybe it was just an anomaly, and the gap reduces, but it felt noticeable. The run game was pretty solid though (also expected under the conditions).
