He was a 10th round pick in the Cowboys 1977 draft.

He had a 21 year career.

He was one of only 34 QB's in NFL history to have over 5000 pass attempts. He threw for over 34,000 yards and 196 TD's.

Only 19 other QB's in NFL history participated in more regular season games.

He played for six different teams......but not a single down for the Dallas Cowboys

He got cut after training camp. The Cowboys already had Roger Staubach and Danny White. However, the greatest factor was he was the 2nd QB the Cowboys took in that draft. They had drafted one earlier in the 2nd round.

He was Steve Deberg and, in retrospect, the Cowboys should kept him instead of Glen Carano, who they took in the 2nd round.

After being cut by the Cowboys, he was immediately picked up by the 49ers and placed on their practice squad. In 1978, he was the starting QB for the 49ers and the first QB to implement Bill Walsh's west coast offense. When Joe Montana was drafted the following year, he became the backup.

In Deberg was traded in 1981 to the Broncos under Dan Reeves as John Elway's backup.

Deberg was traded again in 1984 to Tamp Bay and was there when they drafted Vinnie Testaverde and Steve Young.

In 1988 Deberg was traded to Kansas City.

Do you recall the Thanksgiving game in 1993 in the snow in Texas Stadium? That's the game that Leon Lett touched a live football and the Dolphins were able to kick the winning field goal. You may not remember that Dan Marino was out with an injury. The starting QB for the Dolphins that game was Steve Deberg.

Peyton Manning called him one of the greatest play action pass quarterbacks of all times and claims to have studied film on his technique.

Deberg retired after the 1998 season at the age of 45 as a backup QB for the Atlanta Falcons, coached by Dan Reeves, the same year they went to Super Bowl 33.

One more quick thing about Deberg that always made me laugh. I can’t remember the year, I want to say late 90’s. Some reporter asked a bunch of the prominent players of that year, so like Jerry Rice (that’s how I remember it being in the 90’) which teams Deberg has played for in his career. Rice and a bu ch of other guys struggled to name them off. It was kind of funny. But it shows how much Deberg bounced around the league.

He had a nice long career tho. I hope he’s living good now.

Steve DeBerg -- to think he played for all those years for different teams, and I even forgot he was alive! Go figure.

I'm wondering which team he liked playing for the most -- it might even be the Cowboys! They cared enough to draft him!

As an afterthought, I can't help but wonder which team paid him the most -- it probably wasn't the Cowboys, however . . .

Ah.....the golden years of the Cowboys when they would actually draft a Qb in the 2nd round, ( Greg Carano) despite already having a solid quarterback already on the roster.

Odd post but better than anther post about 4..lol

when I think about bad decisions about like not keeping a certain player Jimmy Smith always keeps coming up because of the timing of when we needed a replacement for Michael Irvin you know after he had to suddenly retire I that just keeps popping up in my head and I know recently I can't remember his name but the cornerback that went to the chiefs and now he's got a big contract and playing pretty well I mean these things happen players slip through the cracks you sometimes keep the wrong one.....

Yeah sure but then I wouldn't have my sweet Glen Carano jersey! Even that jersey would have number ?? on the back.

Another one we let get away back then was TE Todd Christensen. We drafted him in the 2nd round in 1978 as a fullback. He got injured in preseason and missed the season. The next year we wanted to move him to TE and he didn’t agree to that and we waived him.

He later signed with the Raiders, agreed to play TE, and became an All-Pro.

I can remember Deberg playing a playoff game with a splint on his broken finger. Every snap was painful.

Deberg played for 6 teams and Ryan Fitzpatrick played for 9 teams. Both had similar careers. Ultimate journeyman’s.

I remember when he signed his last contract with the Falcons. He was signed to be #3 QB player/coach & thought he hit the lottery... mid-40's, paid like a player, but responsibilities of an assistant position coach. Then injuries happened & he had to actually play.

Jim Zorn was a free agent pick up by the Cowboys in 1975 (the Dirty Dozen year) and was part of the last cuts that year.

For us old timers who remember him well, it seems like that number should be way more than 6. Dude was around for a long, long time and seemed to bounce from team to team a lot.

As a player:

Dallas Cowboys (1977)*
San Francisco 49ers (1977–1980)
Denver Broncos (1981–1983)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1984–1987)
Kansas City Chiefs (1988–1991)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1992–1993)
Miami Dolphins (1993)
Atlanta Falcons (1998)
* Offseason and/or practice squad member only

And because we waived him, the Cowboys were in need of another TE. So, in the 3rd round the Cowboys did something uncharacteristic. They drafted a TE even though the BPA, according to the computer, was a QB.

Yep, they drafted Doug Cosby and a few picks later, that QB was drafted by the 49ers. It was Joe Montana.

You have to feel for the guy. Just as he settled in with a new team they would go draft some future Hall of Famer.

They would always keep Deberg long enough for the new franchise QB to get acclimated before they kicked him to the curb.

He was traded three times in a row and I think it was for a 4th round pick each time.

Although Moose was a great player, hanging on to Steve Wisniewski (our second round pick in 1989) would have been a smart move. Rhondy Weston and Willis Crockett weren't exactly enough to tip the scales. Adding Wiz to the OL for a decade would have made it almost ridiculous. Then again, maybe Larry Allen isn't drafted if he's there...
