Thoughts on Drafting DT1

There are threads and posts about upgrading our defensive line and, in particular a one-technique run stuffer. I get the interest in Barmore -- I think he is much more than a DT1 and can, in fact play DT3. The way he is creeping up the draft board, he may not be available for Dallas in the second. Maybe a trade down to the bottom third of the 1st round is in order if the target is Barmore.

So, what are your thoughts about Shelvin (LSU), Wilson (FSU), McNeill (NCS) and Mathis (A). I like Shelvin, but as a 2 down sort of DT, not sure he is value in the second round. Personally, I like McNeill or Mathis in the 3rd or 4th rounds.

Of course, we could always sign a FA DT1... that has generally worked well for us (sarcasm)

I think the team is still curious what they have in Hill/Gallimore to spend a 1st/2nd pick on someone (3rd day is always a toss up since you get into true BPA territory).

I don't think there's a Pro Bowl-caliber DT in this draft.

Barmore and Nixon are probably your most likely to be pro bowl caliber DT's. That's probably it. Maybe McNeil. Alot of solid types you could get on Day 2 though

Resign McCoy. Sign a guy like Poona Ford.

Let Gallimore and Hill be the depth.

In my opinion, Barmore is just a one dimensional player at this juncture, he offers very little against the run, which this team sorely lacks. He is a 3T, that will probably be a nickel, interior rusher early in his career.

Shelvin is just a 2 down run player and probably comes off the board in rd 3.

Wilson/McNeil are good against the run, with some rush upside which could make them be drafted higher.

Barmore has it — that unmistakable combination of size, strength, agility and flexibility that pretty much every elite defensive tackle in the NFL possesses. That's why he is where he is on this list despite having played only 269 career snaps. On a snap count that low, it's difficult to make too many sweeping conclusions about his play other than that he's damn good.

He earned an 83.0 run-defense grade and an 88.1 pass-rushing grade on his snaps last season.

 yall gonna put respect on his game

Barmore is actually considered a 3T much more so than a 1T. I wouldn't take him in Rd1, definitely not at 10. A rd 2 pick, probably.
But I love all 360+ lbs of Shelvin from LSU. If we could possibly land him in the late 3rd with our comp pick I'd be ecstatic.
I know Quinn likes his big DT's so if we went nuts and took Barmore at 45 and than Shelvin at 99, I'd be doing back flips.

Stephen is that you?

Don’t get me wrong, I won’t be shocked when that happens (Poona might even be too much to ask). But as a fan to want that to happen? Insanity. Apparently you enjoy losing. Are you also ok with Woods and Wilson back as S’s next year?

I'd be happy with Barmore. He is probably going to be taken in the Top-25...if we have to reach for him at 10 then so be it. Maybe he turns into a Chris Jones-type DT (who was a 2nd rounder himself). I don't think Hill and Gallimore are going to scare them away from drafting DT early if it's someone they really like.

However, if the alternative is to play it safe and take a CB at 10 and a run-stopping DT in the 2nd or 3rd then that's fine too.

I don’t think it’s all that off, especially from reality.

There are no generational 3T’s, the ones available where we pick in round 1 (Nixon/Barmore) are not worth that selection, the team has invested 2 top-85 picks on back to back 3T’s, and it seems as though McCoy will be back. These circumstances don’t really lend themselves to drafting a 3T. Also, Gallimore definitely seems like he’s a keeper.

I will admit, the McCoy/Hill/Gallimore 3T rotation only works if McCoy is healthy and Hill can be a consistent rotational guy. I think there’s a 50/50 chance of that happening. But from a FO point of view, the players they’ve invested in along with a lack of a surety in a generational 3T at the top of the draft significantly slims down the chances a 3T is picked high.

What we do need is a starting run-stuffer 1T. Woods is a solid backup, so if you pair him with a legit starter then you’ve got your 1T’s. You’re only carrying 2 on the roster lol you’ve got your backup in Woods so unless you think Poona Ford is not a starter, I’m not sure what you’re so taken aback by. It’s either a FA like Ford plus Woods or a 2-4th round pick plus Woods. Either way the post wasn’t egregious.

What Gerald McCoy do you think we’re getting even best case scenario? McCoy started breaking down from his pro bowl form back in 2018 and now here we are in 2021 with him coming off of major knee surgery. Thinking he’s going to be a reliable above average contributor is crazy.

And it’s funny how people key in on the few splash plays Gallimore made, but completely ignore him getting washed out of damn near every single running play. Unless there are drastic improvements he can’t be an every down player. Trust me, you can go back to my posts last year and find Gallimore in a whole bunch of mocks I did, but he’s a 1 trick pony that should be a part time player...which is fine for the 3rd round pick he was.

Long story short- our front 7 is terrible and bringing back more of the same will result in more of the same performance.

First I've heard of McCoy coming back, any link available to that scenario?

McCoy is most likely done, how much can he really add at his age and coming off major knee surgery? Funny stuff to think he can really help...

I tend to agree with you. Also I think they resign McCoy so dt won’t be a priority again this draft.

Barmore's a baller, but in the top 10, you can find several different players who are also ballers.

It comes down to who else is available IMO. I like the player, but I wouldn't pass up say Farley or Surtain for him.

I’d double dip with DT:
  • Barmore (3T) in Round 1/2
  • Tedarrell Slaton (1T) in Round 4/5
Both are in that 6’4”-6’5” range, with Barmore probably around 310-315 while Slaton EASILY will be around 335+

Was it a knee? I thought McCoy tore his quad muscle? Either way at his age I'd be concerned.

Have you followed Javon Kinlaw and Derrick Brown at all this year? Brown showed more than Gallimore, but he was not consistent either. It takes time for interior DL to develop. I would not be hard on Gallimore. He looked better at the end of the season than he did earlier which means he is at least developing. The Cowboys need more talent at DT, but Gallimore clearly shows promise. I am not as optimistic about Hill, but he is still young and inexperienced. I just don't see him as ever being the stout run defender.
