PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP)
Tiger Woods says he didn't do any more damage to his left leg at The Players Championship and expects to play the U.S. Open next month.

Woods made it only nine holes last week at The Players — his shortest tournament ever — when he withdrew after nine holes because of what he described as a chain reaction of pain from his left knee to left Achilles and tightening in his calf. He shot 42 on the front nine.

On his website Monday, Woods said he irritated the knee and Achilles without making them worse. He said doctors have advised rest, cold water therapy and soft tissue treatment, which he said he already had been receiving.

''Aggravating my injury is very disappointing,'' Woods said. ''I'll do whatever is necessary to play in the U.S. Open, and I'm hopeful I can be there to compete.''

I heard this before and I wondered... What exactly is "cold water therapy"? Just like icing to reduce swelling, or something more involved?

I'm not 100% sure what this type of therapy is but I believe it's a method in which you stimulate your muscle groups in a given area of the body with hot water and basically, shock the body with cold water. The idea is that the water shock opens up pathways and stimulates the flow of blood to those injured areas. It is also supposed to help with imflamation to injured areas. Basically, the more blood you get flowing to or throw injured areas, the quicker the body heals those injuries.

I've never tried it so I have no real knowledge of exactly how effective this type of therapy is but that's the crux of it, as I understand it.

Cool, I hadn't heard of something like that.

So it's not that different from icing... You just don't have to worry about ice burns when the ice is left in contact with the skin for too long.

How long did you have to use this per session and how often, dooms? Just curious as I've been recovering from a fairly bad knee sprain and for the first time in my life I've had to do this kind of stuff. :(

I used it constantly for the 1st 2 week after the procedure then on and off over the course of a couple of months.

Currently I have been diagnosed with RA and have been using it once again after any activity like golf to help reduce the swelling that takes place in my shoulders

Same here, I loved that thing! It felt so good after doing rehab. They would put electronic stimulus pads on my shoulder and then wrap the cold water sleeve around it......loved it!

Open the lid and throw a couple of brews in there and your set. Just remember it is not a urinal. :laugh2:
