Yes after taking a 8 year or so hiatus from flag football a as yet unnamed 53 yr old male is getting back into the mix. He up until 45 years of age was quite the athletic young gentlemen which included a healthy amount of running hills and overspeed training.

Any tips or advice will certainly be passed on.

Most people when they try to run as fast as they can, they tense up their muscles. The trick is actually to relax them while running.

For what kind of distances? If it's just sprinting, then sprint a lot. Do core work. Also implement squats, flexibility training and explosive training like depth jumps and box jumps.

Can't help you out, JohnBoy, as I refuse to run unless something is chasing me, preferably an armed jealous husband. I am working on getting my 40 time down and hope to have it completed by November.

Unnamed 53 year old man, why are you running? Why in such a hurry to get somewhere? Slow down and enjoy the journey, walk or meander, deep and reflective in thought and assure yourself that the race does not belong to the swiftest but the one that arrives without something pulled or torn.

But I cheer you and embrace your return to exercise and you have inspired me to do the same. I will actually stand on the treadmill for 10 minutes today. Just hope I don't sprain something dismounting.

Anywhere from 30-60 yards, am going to start running the hills very soon also have a pair of jumpsoles in the garage which haven't been used in about 10 years.

I used strength shoes in the late 80's early 90's. I'm not sure if they helped increase my jumping or speed. I've wondered if its just a gimmick.

Don't think they are, when I was using them quite a bit I did notice a gain in my vertical jump as well as overall quickness. I was doing other stuff at the time so it could have been the other stuff as well. But overall straight line speed don't think they made a huge difference. What helped me the most was I had a elastic band about the size of your little finger but about 30 feet long. I would loop it around a goalpost, tie it together and step inside of it, stretch it out to about 30-40 yards and let it pull you like a slingshot. It teaches your muscles to run faster than they actually can.

Yea it's not easy to tell. They do something for the legs cause after using them my legs used to burn/feel worked.

Remember those shoes that Jordan wore in college where the heel was lower than the foot bed? Supposedly, that was to elongate the calf muscle and allow for better jumping. Pretty strong case for him with that hang time. One time he left the free throw line and I went to pee, made a sammich, got a beer and put the clothes in the dryer and when I came back he was just finishing his dunk.
