I got a signed Bates jersey. Nice of Jerry throwing us old timers a bone once in a while honoring one of our favorite players.

I have a feeling that the days of full speed collisions that were a Bates hallmark have caught up with him. He does not look good at all in those pictures. He was definitely one of my favorites in the 80s, and I was really happy for him when he came back from a torn ACL to play in Super Bowl XXVIII. I hope he's doing OK. He definitely deserves to be honored by the organization for his play and for coaching special teams.

He's obviously one of the guys that I love that ever wore the star. Played the game the right way and is so underrated it ought to be deemed a criminal offense. Congrats to him, a key cog for the teams success for many years.

My uncle by marriage, great, salt of the earth type of guy. I’ve only met him a few times but do remember having Thanksgiving at his place in some high rise condo.
That is very cool. He was one of those players that I wanted to play like in highschool. I wanted to hit hard just like him. The guy was smart, high football IQ and tough as they get. A spark plug. Glad he's getting his just due now.

I don't think I ever saw him outside of special teams, but man he was good at that.
He played anywhere and everywhere they asked him. He played safety , linebacker too. Mostly early on in his career. He was much more than a ST guy. I recall watching him pick off theismann a couple times in a game . I think it was 1983.
