Seeing as how the year is almost gone, I'm wondering what your top five movies for the year are.
Let me preface this by saying that I believe this was one of the most disappointing years in film we've had for a while. Most of these films would not crack my top five list or even top ten in any other year. I also haven't seen some of the recent so-called Oscar contenders like Million Dollar Baby, Sideways or The Aviator as of yet.
Honorable Mention - Team America - World Police. I haven't laughed that hard in a theater for quite a long time. The movie has its ups and downs in terms of comedy, but for sheer moments of hilarity, it was the funniest movie of the year.
5. Passion of the Christ - It's hard to really say it's a good film since it is essentially witnessing hours of pain and suffering, but it's moving nonetheless and caused more than a few people to rediscover meaning in their own lives.
4. Spider Man 2 - For all out fun, it was the year's granddaddy. I enjoyed it more than the first one and will be sad to see the final film in the trilogy (I don't see Sam Raimi prolonging the series nor should he IMO).
3. Friday Night Lights - A great sports movie. Not quite Hoosiers or the Natural, but still a solid accomplishment. Billy Bob Thornton is underappreciated for his diversity of roles in Hollywood but he's always entertaining.
2. Spartan - The film barely made a peep but I highly enjoyed it. I've always enjoyed David Mamet films and this is no exception. Crackling dialogue and some great surprises as well. Would have topped my list if not for a deflated third act of the film.
1. Collateral - Tom Cruise is probably the coolest bad guy to come down the pike since Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York. It helps that Jaime Foxx is a considerable talent of his own. Some great moments of humor as well as the best action sequence of the year. No film impressed me more than Michael Mann's latest superb offering.
