Towing scam dream

I usually dream stuff that's totally wacko and way out there, but I may have had my first dream that is feasible in real life. I dreamed that some crook was running a towing scam and I was working with the FBI trying to stop him. He could somehow find out if someone's car got towed for a legitimate reason like illegally parked, pulled over for a DUI, or whatever. He would then go into the impound lot and pay the fines, then re-tow it to his own impound lot, then send the owner an official looking message supposedly from the government about where the car was and demanding a massive payment for it that was five to ten times higher than the original fee to reclaim the car. He called his own supposed organization the US Anti-Terrorism Task Force to make it sound official and like part of the government when it really wasn't. His letter he sent out to his victims made it sound like they were suspected of terrorism and they'd better just pay up or they would be the subject of an investigation.

I woke up this morning wondering if my mind really dreamed this up or if it was re-creating something that actually happened. Has anyone heard of some crook re-towing cars and then gouging the car owner?

Your mind probably just substituted car towing for illegal porn.

Have you been to Toronto lately? Other places in Ontario? Towing in Ontario is a complete scam and unregulated. In Toronto, tow companies prowl the 401 (similar to any big city freeway) and if they see a car broken down, they will stop and tell you the Ontario Provincial Police has told them to get you towed and off the HWY, while price gauging you. If people say no or resist...the tow drivers start to bully and in most cases the car owners relent.

I'd never want to be broken down on the HWY...but if I ever am...I want one of these neanderthall scammers to stop and try to scam me. I'm tight with money...when I open my wallet, it no longer squeaks, I have to give it a squirt of WD-40. plus our cops are not like that. I know. When I had my police check done for a new job. I made a small error that they fixed and put a rush on the check. Its still a bureacracy...but one with human decency.

I found a page on how to avoid towing scams. Now that I think of it, I think that the towing scam I dreamed of would be hard for a scammer to pull off. To get a car released from the impound, you to prove you're the car owner with a photo ID. I supposed that's possible, but he would have to make a fake ID for every car he illegally tows away. Seems unlikely when there are other scams.

Here's the page I found on what they are and how to avoid them.

Do not know about terrorism but I suspect extremely wealthy folks have occasionally used bribery as a way of avoiding tax evasion indictments lol.
