Glad they didn't go the way of KB-Toys.

I thought I've read in the past they will make some existing stores smaller in inventory, and use the remaining space for kid play areas in parts of the stores.

Good luck, but competing with multi-entity online market places like Amazon, Walmart, etc will make it very difficult for brick and mortar stores to compete.

Man, I hope they hurry. I hate the way it is now. Shop online, site unseen, it's horrible. Used to be, you could take the little ones in the store, let them see, touch and from that you knew what they liked. After that, you could go get some Ice Cream or some such and really make a day of it. That was fun! It was fun for the kids and it was fun for me. Now, you look at a web site and if you are really lucky, they like it but it's more likely that it's not what you want, it's not the size you want, it's not the quality you want or it just plain doesn't work.

So happy to hear this news!

Will Toys R Us make sure their prices are competitive or will it be through the roof again ? that probably had a hand in the drop off of public sales and buyers sought better deals elsewhere.

I know that not everybody feels this way but I, personally, would accept the trade off. I would pay more for the opportunity to go in the store and look at what I'm paying for. I'd rather spend more and know that my Grandkids like what they get, as opposed to spending and watching them never ever play with it. JMO though.

File Chapter 11, destroy your vendors, destroy your employees, then pop back up a year later peddling toys. Yeah I'll buy my marbles elsewhere.

But for most things, you could also go to Walmart or Target and see them in person...for 30% less.

I don't agree with that. There are many, many things that we have been able to find over the years at Toy Stores, and not at Walmart etc. I also don't agree that you find them for 30% less. In most cases, maybe a few dollars difference.

There's always going to be a portion of the public that wants (as others have pointed out) touch, see, feel what they are buying.

Always will be.

In addition there are many that want it NOW! And even 1-day delivery won't work.

The price advantages of online shopping are shrinking... More & more collecting sales tax. The so called "free shipping" is just being hidden in another charge.

I'm not convinced that creating an online business is less expensive overall than building a chain of brick & mortars.

The amount of infrastructure needed to support an online business is staggering.

But the biggest thing may be the cost of advertising. Online advertising continues to go up in cost. Whereas the cost to lease a spot near a high-traffic area is decreasing due to the abundance of empty store fronts.

No doubt in my mind that a brick & mortar toy chain can succeed. They just need to offer more product that isn't sold by the mass merchandisers both big (Wal-Mart, Target) and the small (Dollar General).

Amazon isn't making money selling their own stuff. Amazon is making money through AWS and through the 3rd market sellers.

For me, once Amazon had to start charging sales tax, it created a more equal field with local stores.

While I rarely return items unless they are defective, knowing that I can return something and get a refund or a non-defective exchange immediately is more appealing to me than saving a few dollars .. within reason of course.

It's also nice not worry about porch pirates, shipping delays, shipping damage, etc. headaches.

I treat it like insurance. You can skimp on insurance and enjoy those savings while doing so, but all it takes is having one time you need to use it for you to start thinking about how much easier it would have been had you bought it locally.

That said, I do like using online stores for items you cannot get locally.

For technology items though, Best Buy will price match Amazon usually and there is a local Best Buy store so I will usually buy through Best Buy even if I have to order it online specifically because I know I can return it to the local store if necessary without the hassle of RMAing, packaging, shipping, etc. the item back to the online store.

In any case, I like options so it is nice knowing that online stores like Amazon are an option when necessary or preferred.
