So my car was broken into on tax day, my buddy's backpack lifted and they found my mac book hidden under the seat while I was in a restaurant.

I did not have mobile me which I realize might have aided in tracking but have been told that OSX 10 has the capability to track off site, is this incorrect information?

Does anyone know how to turn the stolen MacBook Pro into a homing device s o we can nail the thief?

Much obliged.

By now it's probably in a pawn shop so I'd be surprised if you find the actual thief.

Your chances of finding it are slim to none. I had a friend whose laptop got stolen out of our apartment and never heard about it again after filing a police report.

I don't believe they come with any tracking software installed by default. The best you can hope for is that any of the saved credential sites you had in your browser get accessed via the persons new connection. So what you're gonna need to do is check into contacting those sites to change your passwords and let them know if anyone attempts to access your account with the old password that it's a thief and to notify you because your laptop has been stolen.

In the future your best bet is to install tracking software on your macbook/laptop and/or physically secure it better.

No clue, but I hope that in addition to having a good Draft Day, you find your MacBook and have the chance to hit the Perp in the nads with a 2X4.

I heard of a kid who had a ipod stolen a few years back and apple tracked the ip when it was synced to a computer through itunes.

I know there is software for tracking a computer but I've never seen anyone even think about before their computer got stolen.

You might be able to call apple and ask them if they can pull the ip the next time your computer logs into itunes.

Probably be a long shot.

The IP would change. Ask for the Mac address instead.

Probably better to go with the Mac address.

The best thing to do is install an anti-theft device. My first Mac got stolen and the police, of course, never found it. Since then I have a software that links to the police. If it were ever stolen they can track it. A simple google search will put you on top of what you need for the future. Sorry about your loss.
