Apples to oranges comparison.
A better way to devalue a player would be to compare him to someone playing the same position.
I’m all in for sitting here next year reading the complaints about the Cowboys not making a WR move in the 2023 offseason.
100%. Multiple factors make this not a straight comparison:
1. Top WRs make 28-30m$. This is way more than top corners, implying it’s a far more valuable position
2. WRs of Hopkins’ talent are often pro bowl caliber well into their 30’s. CB’s of Jalen’s talent may play well in their early 30’s but very rarely make it to 33, 34, 35 playing at a high level.
3. WR is an extremely valuable position even when they don’t play every snap. If Deandre Hopkins only plays ~70% of the snaps for you, you can still get 15-20 million of value out of him on the season. He’s a player who can put up 1100, 1200 yards in 14 games. If Jalen only plays 70% of the defensive snaps, he’s either been injured too much or was on the bench too much and isn’t even worth 10m$.
4. Deandre is a team player. Even when he had a falling out in Houston, we didn’t hear him crying on Twitter about it. Jalen is always yapping, we’ve heard him bad mouth Jacksonville, their ownership, and as soon as he leaves LAR, he’s probably going to talk about them too. Who wants to be the next team he throws under the bus?
5. Deandre was on pace for 1300+ yards last year if he wasn’t suspended. His “down” season is CeeDee Lamb’s career year, and most of that was with backup QBs… while Jalen was getting burned a bit more than usual. You can take it with a grain of salt, or that their career trajectories are going in different directions
IMO, Deandre is easily worth a 2 because his contract is good, and you can re-sign him to easier numbers for the cap. Jalen is making similar money, which makes his contract not as desirable because he’s a CB and not a game breaking WR. I don’t trust Jalen will be pro bowl caliber in 3 years. Deandre very well could be.
