Andrew Luck opens the 2010 season as the most celebrated Stanford quarterback this side of John Elway, a grounded, whip-smart athlete who might emerge as a leading Heisman Trophy candidate as well as a top NFL draft prospect.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Beginning with the season opener against Sacramento State on Saturday, two central questions will chase Luck into the post-Toby Gerhart era like pass rushers bent on mayhem:

Can he smooth the transition for an unproven corps of tailbacks asked to replace the record-setting Gerhart and avoid the dreaded "sophomore slump"?

Will this be Luck's last season at Stanford?

If the answer to the first query is, yes, then almost certainly the response to the next will be, too.

With Gerhart now a Minnesota Vikings rookie, all eyes shift to quarterback, where Luck can prove beyond a doubt he belongs alongside Cardinal greats John Brodie, Jim Plunkett and Elway.

"He had it all last year," coach Jim Harbaugh said of his quarterback's talents, "and he has it again this year."

As a redshirt freshman, Luck passed for 2,575 yards and 13 touchdowns with only four interceptions. He also led the Pac-10 in passing efficiency and was the team's second-leading rusher behind Gerhart as Stanford (8-5) reached its first bowl game in eight years.

Luck's zip-line passing and sound decision-making skills are an excellent start. They mix nicely with a starting wide-receiver

Luck was born to be an NFL QB. He very well could go #1.

Luck was born in Washington, D.C.,[1] the son of Oliver Luck, a former West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback and former NFL quarterback for the Houston Oilers, and Kathy Wilson Luck. Andrew Luck spent his early childhood in London, England and Frankfurt, Germany, where his father was general manager of two World League of American Football teams prior to becoming president of the league. In London, he attended The American School in London [2]

The Lucks returned to Texas when Oliver Luck was named CEO of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, and Andrew Luck attended Stratford High School in Houston, Texas, where he threw for 7,139 yards and 53 touchdowns in his high school career, and rushed for another 2,085 yards. His high school career was ended at the Texas 5A Regional Semi-finals by Clements High School in 2007.[2][3] Luck was also co-valedictorian of his graduating class in 2008.[3]
