Becoming a top NFL prospect usually requires a lifetime of dedication to football and the willingness to chase after a dream. And then there is Danny Watkins. The Kelowna B.C. native didn't grow up playing football, didn't like it and never even watched it on television. So what is he doing at the Senior Bowl this week among the very best NCAA football talent being poked, prodded and measured by an army of NFL coaches and scouts?
"I can't say it's a dream because I never grew up wanting to play in the NFL," said the 6-foot-4, 315-pound Watkins. "I shouldn't say I hated football but I didn't care for it. I just kinda stumbled into it." Watkins' dreams growing up were all about hockey, a game he played lascrease-clearing defenceman who modeled his game on the roughest, toughest players in the NHL.
"I like Pronger and Lindros," he said. "They were the big guys who beat-up people. I loved it." This week in Mobile, NFL scouts are loving what they're seeing from Watkins, who is projected to be among the top handful of guards taken in this year's NFL Draft and become one of the highest-drafted Canadians of all-time. Not bad for a guy who strapped on a football helmet for the first time at age 22 and only did so to advance his career in firefighting.
