I guess he lost his pulse for awhile there as well, "Walker stopped breathing for a time but resumed after paramedics used CPR." He would have had to lose his pulse if they started chest compressions. Anyways, this is a horrible thing to happen. Prayers to him and his family for a recovery.

They just said they had to perform an "on-field" tracheotomy to revive him. That has to be a very high level spinal cord injury I'm afraid.

That's the same thing that happened to Christopher Reeve. His break was at the C2 and anything above the C3, nothing receives the messages from the brain. He would have essentially suffocated had there not been a quick acting DR there to trach him where he lay and save his life.

Thoughts and prayers to the young man.

(CNN) -- A Tulane University football player who fractured his spine in a head-on collision with a teammate during a weekend game is expected to remain in intensive care for the next few days after undergoing surgery.

Neurosurgeons stabilized Devon Walker's spine during a three-hour operation at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa on Sunday, the Tulane athletics department said in a statement.

"He is now in recovery, and we anticipate Devon will remain in (intensive care) for the next few days," the university athletic department said. "He is in stable condition, and it will be several days before we can assess his condition post-surgery."

Walker, a safety for the Green Wave, was injured Saturday when he collided head-on with one of his teammates while trying to tackle a Tulsa ball carrier.
