I'm looking to replace the old tube tv in my man cave. Is a 720p tv good enough for gaming?

Yup.. just make sure its not a plasma screen. I have a 720 and its more than acceptable. The main thing is making sure you're internet connection is at a high enough speed to support gaming. The lag is the main thing to worry about if you're going to be doing any online gaming.

I'm not an online gamer but the tv is in the same room as the router so it would be fine for wireless or wired.

Thanks for the info

Happy to help a little. I would definitely recommend a wired connection for online content btw. Much more efficient.

If you're going to buy a new TV and you don't have a very tight budget, you're better off getting a TV that supports 1080p. Most games only run at 720p now, but some do 1080i and blu ray movies can take full advantage of the 1080p if you're using a player or a PS3.

A good 1080p LED is relatively cheap, depending on the size you want.

Depends on the size if it's anything over 40" then 1080p is the way to go, smaller then that and you probably won't notice the difference between 720 and 1080

I'm going to be upgrading to a 1080p LCD HD when I eventually get my new TV. What you're looking for is more than enough if that's what you're happy about. Personal preference, IMO.

I'm on both a budget and space limit so I'll probably have to stick with the 720p.

Sams club has a 40" Samsung LED for around $650....only about 150-200 bucks more than what most similarly sized 720p TV's are going for.

Price around $300
Size best I can get for that price

I'd look at refurbished TV's or try to find some amazing deals at wholesale outlets.....most retailers aren't going to have many TV's over 30 inches for that price. At least not TV's that weren't built in China by a 4 year old.

A quick look at Best Buy showed 2-3 32" TVs around 300. One of which was an RCA. A 26" Samsung for 314.

You'll be able to get a 22 or 24" LED 720p TV for $300. If you're willing to go up to $379 or $400 you can get a nice 32" or so.

And make no mistake, you can definitely tell a difference between 720p and 1080p even on a smaller TV. It's a difference between 1280x720 or 1920x1080 resolution. It's a massive difference even on a 24" computer monitor, and it's only exaggerated on a TV. The prices I listed above include some 1080p options if you're wanting to go for that.

There's nothing wrong with a plasma for gaming. My nephews, and nieces play their xbox 360 games on mine all the time, and there's no burn in, etc., and the picture quality is awesome.

It kinda depends how much you use it though.

Burn in isn't as big of a problem as it was in the past with the newer plasma TV's.. but if you are going to go this route i would make sure you don't play video games on it for the first 100 hours or two.

Also, plasma's take up considerably more energy than LCD TV's so if you are an avid gamer, probably isn't the best option.
