Two things to consider when thinking Smith at 9

You actually would save money by cutting him, but you take a bigger cap hit if you do it this season.

Yes you would save only 2 million. What starting player are you going to get for 2 million.

The cap hit to keep him is 10 million the cap hit to release him is 8 million.

Miles and Dez are the starters this year not Roy Williams.

what are you even talking about. I mentioned Newman. As for Roy Williams, who cares who the starters are. Its cheaper to keep Roy than to cut him loose. We don't have 3 million to let a guy go. I would rather keep Roy on the bench than to cut him and loose 3 extra million. I could use that 3 million on an extra player.

The best thing to do is to keepo Roy this year and release him next year.

If we cut Roy the cap hit is 12 million if we keep him its 9 million cap hit, how do you save money by cutting him. We need that extra 3 million.

However if you cheap out on the idea of Taking Smith because of money then you might as well think back to the failed draft of a few years ago when we kept trading down for ST players...that did not pan out to well for us.

I fail to see how that correlates to this draft. Huge difference trading down from 9th overall and 51st overall, especially when you consider after a trade down this year, we could have 3 or more selections before the 51st pick we traded down in 2009.

I really don't understand the "paying 2 tackles" argument.

Are people suggesting that Dallas not draft the guy because 5 years from now you'll have to pay him and Free more?

Seems ridiculous to think that way.

I agree - so what you think Carimi or Sherrod will not be asking for big money ?

I guess you don't understand how draft picks get paid. Carimi or Sherrod wont be getting #9 money. Dallas wont draft Carimi or SHerrod at 9. They would trade back far enough where they can still land them. Say Dallas trades back to 18 and drafts Carimi. There is a big difference in what the 18th pick gets paid and the 9th pick.

I find it funny that you are so concerned with what the #9 pick is going to get paid.

Pssst...Jerry and crew can afford it if they want it.

Even IF Peterson falls to 9 we cant take him either then..Jenkins WILL BOUNCE back this year and will be due to be getting paid soon too..lord knows we can't pay 2 cb's...move up to 6th to get Peterson? You must be crazy..we can't even afford him @ 9, let alone 6...thank god there isn't a safety worth 9..we already have huff locked up, why pay for another safety?

I'm sick of this argument. The draft can't get here fast enough.

We can afford to trade up for PP. But we will lose a pick so it will be costly. Forget the money involved. In fact I'd trade up again into the first to get one of the two remaining OTs as well. Quality and need over multiple picks every day.

Currently Mark Colombo gets about $5.5m a year

Last year’s no. 9 pick C.J. Spiller got a 5 year $25m deal, therefore if we pick Smith at 9 and cut Colombo the money paid to the RT remains roughly the same.

So there’s no great deal moneywise in paying Free and drafting Smith.

I love how people continue to ignore the revamped rookie pay scale that will enter when the lockout is over.

no one is ignoring it. Just no one knows what the pay scale will be. Do you? Is it going to stay at last years. Will it be for this years draft or next years draft. If the new CBA gets signed after the draft do you think the union is going to allow it to happen to a draft that already happened.

These are questions no one knows the answer to so we have to go off what we do know.

But you still have to pay Free who is a free agent. Free isn't going to be playing for the same amount he got paid last year. There will be a salary cap and last I heard we are currently over the projected 2011 cap.

I'm not saying this is a reason not no draft Smith, its just more of a reason why Dallas might need to or have to trade back in the 1st. They might not be able to afford a pick at #9.

The rookie wage scale appears to be one of the few issues that the NFL and NFLPA agree about. Free is going to sign a big contract; however, when this contract is up, he will be over 30. T. Smith can then be moved to the left side and hopefully, a developmental guy like Sam Young or Jermey Parnell can play RT.
.
Right Tackles spend more time in pass protection now due to the NFL becoming a pass happy league. Also, Right Tackles are facing a lot of elite pass rushers like Clay Matthews who primarily rushes against the RT and others like D. Ware and Okakpo who flip sides during games.
.
Who was the best OT when the Cowboys were winning Super Bowls in the nineties...RT-Erik Williams or LT-Mark Tuinei?

You have to pay Free regardless of whether you keep Colombo, draft Smith (or any other OT in the first or second round) or get a free agent (if there is a free agency period).

It’s just that the sums are very doable if you pick Smith at 9.

I understand that you have to pay Free no matter what and what ever OT you get in the 1st or 2nd. I think your missing the point.
A OT at 18 doesn't get the same amount of money that the #9 pick get. a 2nd round player gets no where close.
I'm saying since the cowboys are already over the projected cap drafting any player at 9 might be impossible. Jerry might have to trade back. Thats all I'm saying. You do understand that players pick father down in the draft make less money than those picked up at the top of the draft.

I'll answer in order.

-No, I don't know what it will be. I do know it will be lower.

-No, it will not be last year's.

-It will be for this year's draft regardless of when it happens. The rookies cannot sign their new contracts until the new CBA is in place.'

-The union is actually for it.

I don't know why you can't see this.
