Comparing newly acquired TY Hilton to OBJ is an interesting stat comparison. Hilton is amazingly similar receiver with a better per reception avg and of course less drama and expense, lol. OBJ has played two less seasons.

Here are the stat comparisons- TY Hilton numbers first, followed by OBJ:
  • Age: 33 vs 30
  • Years played 10 vs. 8
  • Total receptions: 634 vs 531
  • Total yds : 9743 vs 7357
  • Yards per catch: 15.4 vs 13.9
  • Total TDs: 53 vs 56
  • Avg Receptions/Yds/Yds per game: TYH 63.4/974/68….OBJ 68.8/919/76.7
  • Last 3 years receptions/yds/yds per game/yds per rec avg : TYH 41/531/41/12.9… OBJ 47/630/54/13.4
Hilton is obviously a better deep threat and pretty similar in consistency. OBJ is slightly better in a few areas but considering his hype and perceived cost, TYH is a much better value. Is it possible all the OBJ talk from JJ was a smoke screen so we could sign TYH?

Considering how Gallup has played since his return--and I think he had his surgery roughly 10 days to 2 weeks before Beckham, Jr. --- the Hilton signing was the better option.

Bobhaze: As to it being a "smokesceen by the Cowboys GM" - BS

In his 10th and final season as a distinguished Indianoplis Colt, Hilton played in only 10 games (started 9).
Caught only 23 passes for 331 yards = 14.4 YPC (longest was for 52), and 3 TD.
He went through the entire 2022 offseason = FA, TC, preseason ....with no team bringing him in (to my knowledge) for a tryout.
Same applies for the first three months of th 2022 season.

Well I for one am happy we have him. His signing was out of left field but I believe he was also selective about where he wanted to go.

The one area OBJ dominates? Branding and marketing

As I mentioned in the OP, his signing makes me wonder if all the OBJ talk was a smoke screen all along.

I’m surprised at how low the reception total is for both players. Maybe time is flying by for me these days, but man.. it sure seems like both players should have more catches to this point in their careers. Exp OBJ, with all the hype he gets. Idk..

OBJ was very good his first 3-5 years. He’s been average in the last 3 seasons. Injuries have slowed him of course. But IMO his hype has exceeded his performance for some time now. Certainly once a Pro Bowl type player. Now a decent #3 receiver in his 30s. As is TYH. He’s just a bigger deep threat and costs a lot less.

Doubtful. OBJ wanted to get payed big bucks for what amounts to a rehab year. Jerry balked at that and rightfully so.
