Jets, CB Law finalizing agreement on multiyear deal

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Jets and free-agent Pro Bowl cornerback Ty Law have reached an agreement in principle on a multiyear deal, which is contingent on Law passing a physical, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions.

"It's done," one person said.

Jets assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum and Law's agent, Carl Poston, met Thursday night and agreed to many of the parameters of a deal and are now trying to fine-tune the contract. They negotiated throughout the day yesterday.

It is said to be incentive-rich and heavily backloaded. Law will come to New York for a physical early next week.

At issue had been the back end of the deal. The Law camp is said to have agreed on bonus money and first-year salary early on in the talks. Law was reportedly seeking a deal averaging between $6 million and $7 million per season.

Also at issue is that Law wants to get paid if he performs and the Jets want to protect themselves if he doesn't.

The Jets may have to rework several contracts and perhaps even release a veteran or two to make any deal work under the salary cap. One player who might be adversely affected is cornerback Ray Mickens.

Law, 31, is coming off a foot injury that caused him to miss nine games last season. He claims to be fully healthy but some NFL insiders think he might be less than 100 percent and will never be the player he once was. He has worked out for the Chiefs, Jaguars and Lions.

Last season, Law turned down a four-year, $24 million offer from New England, which released him in February for salary cap reasons. Law has found that teams have been reluctant to meet his demands.

While the Chiefs, Jaguars or Lions may be able to pay Law more than the Jets, Law's relationship with Jets coach Herman Edwards, running back Curtis Martin and secondary coach Corwin Brown plus his desire to play for a winner gave the Jets an edge.

Depending on the contract numbers, this could be a big gamble on the Jets part.
I agree, but It's supposed to be a really backended deal and full of incentives. A 85% Ty Law is better than 100% Pete Hunter.

Since I've never been impressed particularly with Ty Law I'm not so sure you are right here. Personally it would tickle me to death if Hunter beat out Law and sent the egocentric lout to the bench. Not saying it will happen but it would be funny as hell if it did.

well, to throw a little respect nors way, he recognized how pitiful our secondary was and that we'd definitely be looking for another CB besides just Henry....it just turned out that Glenn was a better financial deal and probably fit what we were looking for better than Law would have.

The only problem with that is that he projected Law as a FS, not a CB.

That's what I was thinking... the first step to becoming a Cowboy is oftentimes becoming a Jet.

Took you that long to figure out? Who are you, Al Singleton?:D

why did you go off and give nors a new idea.

First he was gonna be traded from the pats to us

then he was gonna sign with us

now he's gonnna be traded to us from the jets.

it will never end untill he retires

Nothing against Law, but I think there is a real good chance he doesn't pass this physical.

He claims to be fully healthy but some NFL insiders think he might be less than 100 percent and will never be the player he once was.

I don't claim to be a "NFL insider", but I've been saying this same thing for weeks now. I had a similar foot injury to Law's (not as serious) and it took almost an entire year for me to recover. Of course it's taking longer for Law...being a NFL CB and needing his feet to run, backpeddle, plant, cut, etc.

You obviously greatly underestimate the reasoning of Nors. I mean there is always the trading deadline :)

Even after he retires it will not end, ever heard of Deion Sanders?

Also, the assumption Law would market himself as a FS, much less be willing to play the position seemed questionable to me. Most corners, particularly those with any sort of value, whether it be in NFL circles or in the player's own mind, are not good bets as safeties.

You couldn't sell it to them or their agents so it's pretty much a waste of time to begin with.

It's prolly a safe bet that Law considers the projection itself, at least at this point of his career, to be a slap in the face. Lots of guys out there like that.

While a lot of good corners slide over at the later stages of their career, not every cornerback on the wrong side of 30 is a viable option there.

Nors just cant catch a break, for the second day in a row:

Jets are gonna package Ty and Johnny Abe for Greg Ellis, Al Singleton, and Andre Gurode (plus anyone else Nors is intent on getting rid of).

Nors, sorry you didn't get your boy.

And I am sorry he will kill the Jets cap and cost NY Johnny.
