.ORLANDO—Although there wasn’t as much contact in Thursday’s East-West Shrine Game practices—they were light ones in shoulder pads and shorts—certain players were able to stand out from the rest. Here’s the rundown on the East squad:
Virginia Tech QB Tyrod Taylor. He flashed his athleticism getting out of the pocket but seemed too quick to tuck the ball and run. He needs to be more patient working through his progressions and view running as more of a last resort.

Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor warms-up prior to practice at Nova University. (AP photo) Ohio State OLB Brian Rolle. Rolle won’t be a high draft pick because of his size (5-11, 218), but he is a fundamentally sound, athletic linebacker. He gets his hands out quickly to set the tight end and is quick to shed and flow to the ball. Despite his excellent speed and fluid hips, he struggled at times in coverage Thursday against taller, stronger tight ends.
Miami S Demarcus Van Dyke. Van Dyke had a poor showing during team drills. He dropped an easy pick when he tried to catch the ball with his body. He followed that by dropping too deep and allowing a tight end to make an easy grab downfield in the seam.
