Got a kick out of this today

Burton reportedly didn't support the Pasqualoni hire, despite – or perhaps as a result of – having another son who played for Pasqualoni during the height of his success at Syracuse from 1997-2001 (aka "the Donovan McNabb Years"). Subsequently, he's threatened not only to revoke his donation, but also to give up his $50,000-per-year luxury suite ("You already have many other empty boxes at Rentschler. My box will just join the list."), cut off an annual $20,000 donation for summer coaching clinics, transfer all remaining scholarship dollars from football to the business school, and begin training "front line managers" for his company at Syracuse's business school instead

Jay Ratliff will have a monster 2011 :)

Did I read the article right? Did a big name ******bag donor basically expect that he had bought himself the right to coach the UConn football team?

That is exactly right. While big time boosters might have some sort of influence over who gets hired, to think that he should have the final yea or nay is ridiculous.

I say it works quite a bit in college football.

I think it is fair to say that to think big money from boosters does not have big influence in a number of schools would be naive.

That is because Pickens donates way more to OSU than this guy does to UCONN. If this guys gets his donations up into the $100 millions then he may have a say on who is hired.

I think T Boone could coach the team if he wanted given the amount he's donated.

He can do whatever he wants with his money, but once he gives it to the school, the school should be able to do what THEY want with it. That's the gist of a donation. A donation shouldn't entitle you to be involved in the day-to-day operations of the athletic department unless the school chooses to allow it.

"You can have ny 3 million dollar donation-- so long as I get the right to approve or disapprove any coaches you hire"...

Talk about arrogant...

To be fair, he's claiming he just wanted to be 'kept in the loop' about who the possible coach would be. Interpret that as you may, but I do think he has earned the right to be kept in the loop and if he wasn't, I could see him getting upset.

That being said, this is a *donation.* When you donate something to somebody, they don't owe you anything in return because then it would not be a donation.

I think this guy has some rights. I think he has the right to stop paying for his suite box and his name taken off the complex and to send his front line managers to Syracuse business school. But the $3 million as far as I'm concerned is UConn's now because it was a donation.

It goes to show you how little Burton thinks of Pasqualoni as a coach because his elder son played under Pasqualoni and then his younger son played at UConn when UConn was a beginning program. The distance from where Burton is from (Greenwich, CT) to Syracuse isn't that big of a trip, so he didn't send his younger son to UConn because of location. And with him wanting his donation back, it's obvious he thinks very little of Pasqualoni as a coach because of his dealings with him when his son went to SU.

So I ain't the only one. Far from it.

As far as I'm concerned, if Greg Robinson wasn't so incompetent when he took over SU, Pasqualoni never gets the UConn job because Robinson made Pasqualoni look like a competent coach.
