NEW YORK -- The United Football League says it is adding a team in Norfolk, Va. The team will be the UFL's sixth team overall will begin play in 2011 as its second expansion franchise. The league says it hopes to expand to up to 14 teams.

The league's board approved Virginia businessman Jim Speros as the provisional owner of the team, and former Washington Commanders quarterback Doug Williams as the general manager.

Speros was the founding owner of a Baltimore-based team that played in the Canadian Football League in the mid-1990s, and coached with the Commanders under Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs. Williams was the MVP of Super Bowl XXII.

The Omaha Nighthawks will debut in the UFL's second season this fall, joining the Florida Tuskers, Hartford Colonials, Las Vegas Locomotives and Sacramento Mountain Lions.

Sigh. Does nothing for me considering that's a 4-4.5 hour drive. I'll pass.

I live in Chesapeake, about 20 minutes from downtown Norfolk. I'm excited about this.

My only concern will be if there is too much roster turnover. Like, I don't want to root for whole new roster every season. That would be lame.

It's going to be hugely popular in the Hampton Roads area.

As excited as everyone got for last year's inaugural game for ODU, I can't imagine a game out there that isn't well represented.

There is enough local talent, that I'd imagine there should be a good number of players retained from year to year....but I'm not sure how the UFL works.
