James Dickey will be the next Houston Cougars' men's basketball coach.

Three college basketball insiders with intimate knowledge of the search said UH offered the job to Dickey, a former Texas Tech head coach, on Wednesday.

UH is expected to have a press conference as early as Thursday to introduce Dickey as the eighth head basketball coach in school history.

Neither Dickey nor UH athletic director Mack Rhoades was immediately available for comment.

Dickey coached at Texas Tech from 1991 to 2001, leading the school two NCAA Tournament appearances. His 1995-96 team went 30-2, including 16-0 in the Southwest Conference, and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAAs. An academic scandal involving several of Tech’s teams broke shortly before the next season’s Big 12 Tournament, derailing Dickey’s tenure.

Dickey spent 2002-2008 as an assistant at Oklahoma State, where he reunited with former Kentucky boss Eddie Sutton. The two years before Dickey took over at Tech, the school had a 13-45 record under Gerald Myers.

Dickey was 119-58 (.672) in his first six seasons at Tech. His successor, Bobby Knight, went 138-82 (.627).

What is it with Conference USA this offseason? Seems like a lot of Coach shuffling in the basketball ranks (UCF just stole Donnie Jones from Marshall, so that should make for a good rivalry :D ).
