wrong forum! jeeze! but yes, it was a big time upset.

i know. im still at awe. imo new zealand won. rossi faked that fall on the penalty. he shouldve been given a red card for faking. and woods almost hit that corner on the end.

wow

And Italy had an unlucky chance off the post before the penalty. Italy dominated that game. Lippi is just a stubborn coach who left his best finishers home and went with experience over talent to an extent. This squad is a disgrace to a country with such a rich tradition in the sport.

atleast they arent the french right? lol france players told the coach to go F himself and didnt practice because they sent a player home.

so does that lend credibility to what us anti soccer people say about it being a lot of luck? if the best high school players from every team in the country played one game against the worst NFL team the game would end in forfeit because most of the high school team would be hurt before halftime

its a different type of sport, it involves strength and a full matured body more than any other sport. your argument would mean that MMA is also better just because a high school kid cant beat the vets in the UFC. To say its like a high school team winning the super bowl is a little bit of an exaggeration btw. it would be more like if appalachian state beat michigan (oh wait, that happened!! i guess football is "about it being a lot of luck?!?!?!)

there was an element of luck in it but what sport doesn't? if italy play to their full potential then they will win that match every time. if as happenned yesterday though they play well below par, concede a goal that should have been dissallowed for offside and come up against a team who are extremely well organised and work themselves into the ground then they may struggle.

i'm quite sure that football deserves to be ridiculed for this after all no upsets have happened in any other sports and you certainly wouldn't find anything that could be described as luck such as an opportune bounce of the ball setting up a fumble return in the nfl.

i've always thought one of the main appeals of sports is the uncertainty of it.

Not much of a upset when Italy is playing like complete trash. I was not even surprised with the result.

ITALY if they make it past the group stages is one and done.

I saw this game and don't consider it as huge an upset as presented.

Great teams often draw with far lesser teams and especially like this game where the great team had multitudes of chances but just didn't get the winning goal.

Italy dominated this game and had a ton of great chances to score but did not get past a quality GK and had a few bad luck bounces.

to put it in perspective new zealand doesn't even have a professional league.

but they have pro teams, they just play in the australian league, kind of like other teams here that play in other countries, the raptors in basketball and the blue jays in baseball and the saints in football (too soon to make fun of louisiana?)

It's an upset because Italy was ranked 5th in the world and New Zealand was ranked 78th.

Italy looks terrible though, but alot has to do that Lippi didn't bring the right players with him and Pirlo being hurt is killing their offense.

I'm an Italy fan, but if they don't get their heads outta their *** they're done.

I understand that but plenty of New Zealanders do play professionally.

And again, as I watched the game it was clear Italy was the far better side. It is just that the result ended up in a tie. That can and does happen.

you're talking to a celtic fan whose team have been knocked out the scottish cup three times in the last 12 years by lower league opposition, i'm painfully aware that vastly inferior teams can win games. on a happier note i've been on the other side of it when i've been at celtic park when we've beaten barcelona, man utd and ac milan in recent years so i understand that teams can come up against a better team but give a battling backs to the wall performance and get a result.
the fact that italy are world champions, however unlikely they were to retain that title even before this result, and new zealand are a country that can't even sustain a professional league in my mind makes it a massive upset. one that new zealand were fortunate to get but still a massive upset.
