I need to upgrade the hd in my xbox. Mine is an 80GB and I need more space. Is it worth the time and trouble to upgrade or just buy a new one? And how do I transfer my games?

Save the switch to a PS3 and the XBox sucks. I'm not switching nor do I care to switch.

We got like a good size (250 GB) from Tiger Direct for $70 last december, and it was very easy to upgrade. They had cables, instructions, etc. It wasn't difficult at all.

Did you backup your games or start over?

2 parts (USB into xbox and an adapter that plugs into your new hard drive). THere's a disk that comes with it that you put in your xbox that walks you through the whole thing. It just takes a while to transfer from your old hard drive to your new one. Then you turn it off, take out the old hard drive, and then put the new one in (easy) and turn it on.

There may be exceptions on what cannot be transferred, but it is listed in the transfer info

I went to Best Buy and they only sell drives for the newer system. I have the older white one. Where can I find a drive for the older model. Ebay?

I think to switch your games over from one to the other you'd probably have to get a flash drive and move it that way.

I'm not sure though cause i've never done any of that.

They have a 250gb add-on for the regular/older model I bought one about 6 months ago, but I just noticed that it's a little more scarce now probably to coerce people into upgrading to the slim with the built in 250gb. I would just buy the add-on though.

Also for about $14 bucks they have a data transfer cable that works perfectly.

Add on? An external drive?

I'm sorry, I meant the regular HD not an external, like what VietCowboy posted. I just said "add-on" because of how you snap it on the side I guess.

They used to have them at Bestbuy, Amazon etc. but don't really anymore, so you'll probably have to get it somewhere else like a website.

Also, you probably know this but you can re-download everything again off XBox Live, it saves a record that you purchased it before. So you could use a small flash drive to transfer game saves and re-download all the bigger stuff like expansion packs and whatever. Save the $14 for the transfer cable but it takes forever to download stuff.

A word of warning to anyone who does this upgrade. Only attempt the transfer once. :(

I lost all of my games and saved files. :bang2:

Really?

What went wrong?

Don't you still have the info on the old hard drive?

As a last resort you could try to find a cheap memory card and transfer game saves over.

You can download your games (if you bought them from the marketplace) from download history. It should recognize your box's serial number and allow you to download all your previous stuff again.
