I saw footage of the Russians using laser technology to attempt to intercept incoming artillery strikes but the issue was with keeping the thing cool in the field. Our military currently uses the C-RAM CIWS Phalanx to intercept mortars and such. Pretty cool piece of equipment. If you want to see it in action in a night attack, head on over to youtube and search for "Iraq Night Rocket Attack" and watch the 55 second video.

Can't link to it because of the language at the end.

Here's another of it though.

I remember being on a Navy ship and hearing a CIWS (Sea-Whiz) go off as part of an exercise. It sat almost on top of our shop on the flight deck. They told us to remain inside the skin of the ship and that it would be going off sometime in the next 30 mins. When it did finally go off, it caught us all by surprise. I almost went through the roof. Amazing weapon system. I'm told it can actually track it's own rounds.

So... The navy has the technology to fire a freaking laserbeam with the power and accuracy to shoot down a moving aircraft, yet the video quality indicates they chose to film it on what seems to be a VHS handy-cam, circa 1979.
