The Cowboys will be reuniting with an enigma trapped in a mystery stuck in the speed force. After trading for the speeding former first-round pick during the 2018 NFL draft, Dallas got just seven regular season games out of the dynamic slot receiver who can take the top off a defense. A serious injury limited him in his one-year deal, but now Dallas will roll the dice he can remain healthy and give them more in 2019.

The two sides have worked out an agreement for Austin to return to Dallas.

The deal is reportedly just for one season.

Austin should be in line for more snaps when he’s available, after incumbent slot receiver Cole Beasley left for greener pastures in Buffalo a few days ago.

Austin caught just eight passes in 2018, but gained 140 yards for a 17.5 per-catch average. He also scored a touchdown on 25 percent of his receptions, so there’s that. Dallas used him often as a decoy and his impact on the field was evident in the way defenses had to respect his long speed.

The Cowboys also used Austin in their jet-sweep package, with six carries for 55 yards, or 9.2 per carry.

His 13.9 yards per touch was the highest among Cowboys who carried the ball in 2018.

Austin missed from Weeks 7 through 15 of the regular season, and when he returned admitted he was only around 80 percent after suffering a injury where his muscle separated from the bone in his groin area. He was still quick enough to have a punt return touchdown against Seattle (which was called back for a non-contributing block) and another huge punt return in the same playoff game.

What will be interesting is the Dallas offense with Austin and Amari Cooper at full strength. Dallas acquired Cooper after Austin was lost. The former Raiders star lit it up in his time with Dallas and has blazing speed of his own he brings to the table.
