The NFL quarterback is probably the most unique position in all of team sports. Simultaneously given too much credit or blame by some and not enough by others, it is one of the ever-evolving financial landscapes. Salaries across the NFL have grown, but until recently the position did not accelerate at the same pace other positions grew, and certainly not at a pace reflective of the positions growing importance.

The scarcity of top-tier talent, due to various reasons, makes it highly valuable. In the last two weeks, the world has seen Patrick Mahomes become sports first half-billion dollar man, with an almost entirely guaranteed 12-year deal. The NFL is the only of the three major American sports which doesn’t guarantee contracts for their players, so seeing QBs start to guarantee their contracts still has plenty of shock value. Mahomes’ deal goes so deep into the next set of TV contracts, he will average $10 million more per year than the No. 2 QB on the list, Russell Wilson. Wilson signed his deal just one year ago.

With the passing of the 2020 deadline for franchise tag recipients and their teams to work out long-term deals, the figures for the season have now been locked in. Dak Prescott, the only quarterback playing on the tag this year, did not get the deal he wanted and chose not to sign the deal Dallas wanted. That locks him in eighth place when it comes to average salaries across the entirety of contracts, but first overall in terms of 2020 cap hit.

Here’s the Top 20 average QB salaries, followed by the top 10 cap hits for 2020. The latter is wholly different, as players with long-term agreements see lower cap hits over the first couple years of a deal because signing and option bonuses are paid up front, but spread out over multiple years when it comes to the cap.
