Throwback fanatics have had their calls answered.
The NFL informed teams on Thursday that they will be allowed to once again use multiple helmets, beginning with the 2022 season. This relaxing of the current uniform policy opens the door for teams like the Cowboys to wear true throwback uniforms that include a helmet of a different color than their regular headgear.
It was 2012 when the Cowboys last wore their white helmets with the unbordered navy star, the look they sported for their first four years of existence, from 1960 to 1964. The throwbacks were worn on Thanksgiving Day every year from 2004 to 2012.
“Teams can pair the second helmet with alternate, throwback, or Color Rush uniforms,” writes ProFootballTalk’s Michael David Smith, “so long as they follow all league policies on ensuring that all alternate helmets are properly fitted, and that all players are provided with sufficient opportunity to wear the alternate helmets in practice prior to wearing them in a game.”
In 2013, the league announced it would limit teams to just one approved helmet during the season in an effort to reduce concussions. Teams whose old-school look featured a helmet of a different color- such as Tampa Bay’s “Bucco Bruce” headgear or New England’s “Pat Patriot” models- were rendered unable to participate in throwback gamedays.
Teams will now be required “to have a new set of alternate helmets for every player on the roster,” Smith notes, “to ensure that all alternate helmets are the same make, model, and size as the player’s primary helmet, and by requiring players to get fitted for both their primary and alternate helmets at the same time in training camp.”
The Cowboys have until July 31 to inform the league whether they intend to use an alternate helmet at any point in 2022.
