Can somebody explain me the reason for the green football on a stick?

I'm pretty sure it's for the drill LBs often do where the coach moves the ball in various directions and the LB has the react to it. It looks like the stick makes it easier for the coach (he doesn't have to move as much). We did that drill in HS, but the coaches just held the football in their hands and moved it around.
