According to a story on DallasCowboys.com, former Colts’ placekicker Mike Vanderjagt may be in danger of not making the final 53-man roster for Dallas. Vanderjagt has been bothered by a strained groin during the preseason, a situation that has drawn the attention of Cowboys’ coach Bill Parcells. He did not practice kickoffs at all during the team’s training camp in Oxnard, Calif., and now hasn’t attempted any field goals since hitting from 21 yards in the first preseason game against Seattle.

I don't think we're liable for his whole contract if he's not on the roster for the first regular season game. At least that's the way I understand how it will work if we cut Coleman prior to Jacksonville game.

But how big was his signing bonus?? If we cut him, the remainder of that accelerates onto the cap this year...

If not mistaken they could seek an injury settlement if Vandy can't go and Dallas is forced to look elsewhere for a kicker.

Wouldn't be the first time that's happened in the NFL. Ever heard of Jacob Rogers? ;)

Just spent a little time over on that website, I can't seem to find any article that says any such thing... can you offer a link??

I'm dubious, because I seem to recall the Boys gave Vandy a rather significant signing bonus, all of which would accelerate onto the cap this year if they cut him...

Or maybe the Boys are thinkin' about puttin' him on IR, or PUP??

I think he got $2.5 Million to sign.

I find this story, if it exists, unlikely at best.

But the Patriots just cut Martin Grammatica even though he had a solid camp. If BP feels he can't count on Vandy, he's a logical option right now. I'm not comfortable with Suisham.

Colts say Mungro lost for season with Injury

By Tom James
Tribune-Star Correspondent

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Colts Coach Tony Dungy acknowledged the worst Wednesday when he confirmed that running back James Mungro will be lost for the remainder of the 2006 season.

Mungro, the Colts’ short-yardage and goal-line specialist, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the third quarter of Sunday night’s preseason game with Seattle. The fifth-year running back from Syracuse was also a key special teams performer for Indianapolis, so the injury could wind up weakening the Colts in two key areas.

“We are going with James on IR [injured reserve] and [defensive end] Jonathan Goddard,” Dungy said. “It’s really a tough break, an ACL injury. Don’t know when they’re going to do the surgery but at some point that’s just going to be necessary. You feel bad for James.

“He did a lot for us. He was our third back and was a very good runner. A guy that could go in and play tailback and win games for us. He was our fullback when we went to regular formations and short yardage goal line situations. He was a very good special teams player for us. So somebody’s going to have to step into that role. Kory Chapman will get a big dose this week. Tony Hollings did a good job last week and he’ll get some more time. But obviously someone’s got to step into that role.”

Goddard was also hurt in the Seattle game, breaking a bone in his foot, and will be lost for the year. In a third roster move, the Colts released rookie quarterback Mike McGann.

I I I

n More offense for Reid? — With Mungro done for the year, Indianapolis may end up using defensive tackle Darrell Reid more as a blocker. Reid got some work on offense during the team’s training camp practices at Rose-Hulman as the Colts’ experimented with having the athletic Reid come in during short yardage situations.

“It’s something that we’re going to have to consider now,” Dungy said. “I normally like offensive players on offense, but it’s something that we’re going to look at. It’s an option, a good option, right now.”

n Brackett sits out — Middle linebacker Gary Brackett was given the day off after experiencing some soreness in his knee. Former starter Rob Morris stepped in and got the majority of the work with the first-team defense on Wednesday.

“Gary just tweaked his knee [Tuesday],” Dungy said. “Probably would have practiced if it were a regular season week. We still think he’s going to play and be ready to go [for Saturday night’s preseason road game with New Orleans].

n Sanders raring to go — Free safety Bob Sanders, who has seen limited work during the preseason after undergoing dual shoulder surgeries during the offseason, admitted before Wednesday’s practice that he was ready to go out and play Saturday against the Saints.

“I need to get out there,” he said. “I need to go out and test how my shoulder is going to do when I hit somebody. I haven’t done a lot of hitting during training camp.”

Don’t tell that to any of the Colts’ backup receivers. Sanders was a hitting machine during Wednesday’s workout, putting the pads to several unsuspecting receivers.

“He’s supposed to be limited [contact], but he’s hit people harder than we hit in a game,” Dungy said. “That’s probably a good sign, I think. [Sanders hit people] harder than we normally hit them in practice.”

n Colts interested in Boerigter — Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marc Boerigter could be signed to a Colts contract as soon as today. The 6-foot-3 Boerigter played four seasons with the Chiefs (2002-2005), catching 39 passes for 697 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Hastings, Nebraska native was signed to a one-year unrestricted free agent contract by the Green Bay Packers on March 26. The deal was reportedly worth $782,780 with a $90,000 signing bonus. He was released by the Packers Tuesday after struggling through training camp, catching just one pass for 19 yards in two preseason games.

Boerigter, who played at Hastings College, almost signed with the Colts prior to the 2002 season after spending two seasons with the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders (111 receptions for 2,023 yards and 19 touchdowns. He eventually inked a deal with Kansas City, however.

After catching 20 passes for 420 yards and eight touchdowns his first year with the Chiefs, including an NFL-record tying 99-yard touchdown catch and run against San Diego, he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a preseason game in 2004.

“He was actually out here [Wednesday],” Dungy said. “If he passed [a medical physical], we’d like to sign him. We tried to get him when he came out of the CFL. Thought we had him and he went to Kansas City. He’s a guy we’d like to get if it all works out.”

Who's Kicking?
Cowboys kicker Mike Vanderjagt did not play Monday night against the Saints after not feeling 100 percent during warm-ups before the game. Vanderjagt said his groin was sore, but that he could have played if this game counted.
"I just wasn't comfortable enough," said Vanderjagt, who has been nursing a sore groin now for nearly two weeks. "If it was a regular season game . . . at this point, there's no point in rushing back if you're not 100 percent. Hopefully it's ready by Saturday so I can kickoff and kick field goals."
Parcells said this past week his plan was to have Vanderjagt handle kickoffs during next Saturday night's preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers at Texas Stadium, but was expecting him to kick field goals Monday night.
Vanderjagt did not practice kickoffs at all while in Oxnard, Calif. at training camp, and now hasn't attempted any field goals since hitting from 21 yards in the first preseason game against Seattle.
Backup kickers Shaun Suisham and Tyler Fredrickson made the most out of their opportunity, Suisham good from 24 and 42 yards and Fredrickson nailing a 49-yarder.
Suisham handled all but one of the kickoffs, and all but one landed inside the five.
"I thought our kickers, the ones that kicked, kicked pretty well today, both field goals and kick offs," Parcells said.

Kick Question
Veteran kicker Mike Vanderjagt said he doesn't know if he'll play Saturday against the 49ers after sitting out Monday's game with a sore groin.
"I have no idea," Vanderjagt said Wednesday. "I want to play so bad it's killing me. But I have to be smart about it."
Parcells planned for Vanderjagt to kick field goals Monday night and handle kickoffs against the 49ers, but said Vanderjagt pulled himself out of the Saints game.
"It's bothering me because I haven't seen him kick all camp," Parcells said.

I wouldn't be mad. We shouldn't have to rely on the kicking game like we used to anyway. We're a different type team these days. If he can't kick like he used to then what good is he? If we need 2 kickers to make up one, what good is he? I say let's test the young guys these last 2 games and see if one of them will do. What I saw last game really impressed me.

When BP is saying kicking I think he means kicking off, not field goals.

We FINALLY pay a big name kicker to solidify our woes, and we may cut him?? This is never gonna happen. Why is a story from Indianapolis referring to a dallascowboys.com article that doesn't exist? hmmm, maybe trying to make their signing of Vinatieri and his injury seem not that bad.
