Short Stuff — Afternoon Practice, Monday August 7th, Cliff Notes Version

After several days in full pads the Cowboys went out in shorts and shoulder pads today, in a practice session that emphasized teaching rather than hitting. The team worked on punt coverage and seven-on-seven drills, at midfield and in the red zone. Here’s the short report on a very sleepy practice:

After several days in full pads the Cowboys went out in shorts and shoulder pads today, in a practice session that emphasized teaching rather than hitting. The team worked on punt coverage and seven-on-seven drills, at midfield and in the red zone. Here’s the short report on a very sleepy practice:
- Sam Hurd continues his push to make the final roster. He got some heavy reps with the first team offense and made a twisting catch over the middle of a Drew Bledsoe pass. Hurd also got a lot of work on punt coverage teams, lining up as a gunner. His success or failure at the later job will determine whether he makes the team. He’s doing everything he can on offense and has pulled away from Terence Copper and Jamaica Rector the past few days. But those guys have done it on special teams. Hurd has not. Watch his closely in Seattle.
- Stephen Peterman is edging closer to practicing again. He wore out the far end zone running wind sprints with the trainers. He needs to get back on the field if he wants to beat out Corey Proctor for backup guard.
- T.O. continues to ride the exercise bike. Tape at 11.
- The more frightening moment of the session came in a seven on seven drill when Terence Newman crumpled making a cut. He limped to the sideline grabbing at his side. For a moment it was unclear if he had rolled an ankle or pulled something in his left leg. He paced the sidelines for a few minutes trying to walk off the injury then motioned a trainer over to have both ankles wrapped. Not to worry Cowboys fans. Fifteen minutes later he picked off Bledsoe in a red zone drill and sprinted full speed up field. No harm, no foul.
