NORMAN, Okla. -- Last week, the Sooners added a defensive coordinator.

This week, they lost one.

Brent Venables, an assistant at Oklahoma under Bob Stoops since 1999, is leaving to take the defensive coordinator job at Clemson.

Venables was co-defensive coordinator at OU from 1999 to 2003, before taking over the defensive playcalling after Mike Stoops left. But last week, Bob Stoops brought his brother Mike back to the staff, relegating Venables to being a co-coordinator again.

Heard this was in the works 3-4 days ago. I know he is loyal to OU but I think he pretty much had to go somewhere else if he wants to eventually be a HC.

Pretty sure the driving force around this move was Bob Stoops bringing back Mike Stoops and naming him CO-DC. I understand why he did that but if your Venables, why would you want to go from DC to CO-DC?

I do agree thou. Venables has to move on. I liked the idea of Venables taking the job as DC at WV. Would have been good to keep him in the Big 12 and also to watch him go up against the Stoops boys but perhaps that's part of the reason he decided not to take the job. IDK. Hate to lose him to the ACC but I guess he felt like that was the best deal for him.

He is an excellent recruiter but he had the reigns the last couple of years really at Oklahoma. The Sooners def regressed a heck of a lot since MS left, but this will def hurt Oklahoma in the recruiting department.

Good for BV though, I totally understand the move for him and his future.

Good luck coach BV and thanks for all of your knowledge and leadership @ OU. Stand up guy you are and you your energy will def be missed.

I disagree about recruiting; they had no trouble before. I think this move makes a lot of sense for OU; what has held them back for years was a D that could not make a stop when needed.

Sound familiar?

They did not want him to leave. They really wanted him to stay.

Or are you talking about bringing stoops back in?

On a side note I would imagine that most sooner fans are at least happy that martinez is no longer on staff.

 Most didn't want BV to leave true, but a lot were calling for a huge change, thus the praise and pumping of Mike Stoops return.

It's proably for the best BV moves on. This way he can establish himself outside of Bob's shadow.
