VILLANOVA, Pa. - Matt Szczur stood on the sideline of Villanova Stadium on Tuesday afternoon in his football practice gear. Just a few months ago, he didn't know if he would ever get a chance to do that again.
Szczur returned to Villanova on Aug. 3 after playing with three different teams in the Cubs' organization. In a combined 25 games in the Arizona Rookie League, Class A Boise and Class A Peoria, he hit .347 with 10 doubles, 10 RBIs and two stolen bases. He also had a 21-game hitting streak.
Szczur is back with the FCS' top-ranked football team as one of 15 returning starters, including Whitney.
Last season, Szczur was the only Division I football player to score four different touchdowns: running, receiving, kick returning and passing. He scored 15 touchdowns and averaged 149.3 all-purpose yards in 15 games.
He's a preseason All-American and on the Walter Payton Award watch list for the top FCS offensive player.
Around campus, he almost has a cult-like following because of his achievements, which include donating his bone marrow in April to a 1-year-old girl with leukemia.
And the only big purchase he made since getting his contract was a necklace from Tiffany's with a dove that represents faith for a friend who had cancer. The present marked the fifth anniversary of her lung transplant.
"He's almost a legend around here," Talley said.
