After his unit finished #1 in the nation in total defense for the second year in a row, Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster was honored with the Frank Broyles Award on Tuesday in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Foster knows defenses and how to mix up blitz packages.......we should consider this guy!

I think BP and the head coach at VT are friends or at least there is a lot of respect there, I think I have heard BP talk about him some.. so I doubt that BP would go after that coach unless he had the HC complete blessing.

I'm curious why Foster hasn't gotten any offers to be a head coach on the college level. He's been very successful as an assistant. Any unbiased VT fans with the scoop on that one? Is he a poor interviewer? Not a strong recruiter?

its Groh at UVA not Frank Beemer at VT but he may like Beemer too i just know hat Al Groh and he are butt buddies

I've been telling my friends this for a while(Bringing him to BIG D)! Their were some articles in the Va Pilot around the time of their bowl game about how he gets no respect and has never been offered a HC job or NFL job.

Your right.. I was mistaken.. good call.

Bud Foster is GREAT defensive coordinator

But his scheme is built for the college game and despite what the rumors are, he rarely blitzes anymore

His D's are built around dominant d-lines that can apply pressure from the DE spot, 8 in the box to stop the run and then zone D on 3rd down

The WLB in his scheme is called a "whip" and the SS a "rover" both hybrid LB/DB type players

It is not quite a 4-3, but its based off that scheme

He generally does not bring pressure but relies on a dominant D-line to get the job done. The players gang tackle every play and its a swarming D

The weakness to it? A very strong passing game that can provide protection. If you can pass protect against the VT d-line you can throw it down the middle of the field a bit. Its gotten better over the years because of better athletes on VT's D, but the schematic weakness is there

I for one would be a miserable Commanders and Hokie fan if Bud Foster left and went to Dallas

And Al Groh of UVA is buddies with Parcells

He is not a great recruiter and apparently does not interview well

The man can coach. The man can scheme. He can get in your face

But people, even at Virginia Tech are not sure how much "head coaching" matieral he has?

The big rumor is that Bud is waiting to take over at Tech when Frank Beamer retires. But thats completely unsubstantiated, but a guy I would love to see carry the torch

How about Bob Davie? He knows the 3-4 and ran it well as DC at A&M. :D

I am just kidding.

I figured it was better than a cheesy pick of me holding up a big tuna but yes I get out in the canyons as much as possible. And it is actually a pic of a white marlin that you rarely see lit up like that but enough about that. HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS!!!
