WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Park Service says engineers have found a crack near the top of the Washington Monument presumably caused by a magnitude-5.8 earthquake that shook the East Coast.

I lived in NoVa for about 12 years, and in DC for one....never set foot in the Washington Monument. I was in DC last weekend and had some time to burn and found myself hitting up the museums....looked over at the monument and thought to myself..."I should really go up there, what happens if something happens to it and I miss my chance...eh, I'll wait until I can bring the kids here"

Odd timing.

Strangely symbolic.

It symbolizes that a moderately sized earthquake hit the area. Nothing strange about that.

Eh? You didn't like George Washington? He is easily in my top 5 greatest men in history.

The bad of this is I'm not sure the monument can be repaired properly. I haven't been to DC yet besides just flying through. I'm going to have to make a trip soon.

If they have to take it down, I hope they rebuild it. It's an iconic structure on several levels. Not only is it a monument to a great man, it's also the tallest completely stone structure in the world and also the largest obelisk. It was also the tallest structure in the world until 1889 when the Eiffel Tower was completed.

Sad thing is, I've been to the Eiffel Tower, but not the Washington Monument.

I get to D.C. often but it's funny, I never go down to the Mall much. I drive around it but rarely do I actually visit the Mall. I took my wife to D.C. a few years ago. She had never been so we went and it was the first time in years I visited the Mall. We went in the evening, was beautiful. If you ever go, I recommend you visit in the evening. Much, much cooler and all of the Monuments are much more beautiful when lit up. JMO
