Watching Dontari Poe - NT - Memphis

So is it your contention that if youre 6'5" you can't play nose?

never said that just showing the current sizes of the current NTs, I don't think 1 inch will make a big difference. I actually listed these players to show tall NTs that start in a 3-4 NT are still pretty good. I would take Soliai or Garay right now.

He declared yesterday and should definitely be on our watch list this off-season. Wes Bunting, who's usually pretty accurate, said Poe is raw and needs to work on some technique issues i.e. hand placement, arm extension, wasted motion, but also said he's got one of the highest ceilings in this class and has the potential to be a premier interior presence at the next level. His triangle numbers are off the chart and he compared him to a bear at the LOS, having his way with offensive lineman.

This isn't meant to be antagonistic, but a sincere question. Have you seen Poe play? I'm asking because Poe is exactly as you described above (minus the gut); his calfs/thighs look like he's carrying bowling balls in them.

Again, he does play with good knee bend and leverage at times, otherwise he wouldn't be able to pentrate and get the push he's demonstated he can get. Yes, his technique isn't always consistent, but that's a technique issue that can be taught at the next level. Playing in Memphis (C-USA) and being one of the strongest athletes in the country, I'm sure his technique can get sloppy because he's simply able to get away with it.

I'm not advocating taking him in the 2nd round, but I do think he's a Round 2-4 potential.

I agree....we need that imposing guy in the middle of the defense....it's a 3-4 setup you rarely win without one with this defense. Guy is huge, athletic and has a very good attitude, but I think there is zero chance he lasts past round two if he tests out ok.

I like Poe too, but not in the 2nd. If Cowboys go NT/DE in the 2nd, then I would rather go with Alameda Ta'amu.

He is a true NT.

he sucks.....i guess you missed the Alamo Bowl. Baylor had over 700 yds of offense, over 400 yds rushing, and a lot of it right up the middle. Oh and 60+ points.

BTW, this was just a pitiful end to a pitiful season for the Washington D....and he is a major part of that mediocrity. I do not want him in Dallas.

I don't see the Cowboys drafting the traditional NT type anyway.

6'5" is too tall to play NT if you ask me.

I ran the numbers last year on all the starting and upcoming starters (guys like Terrance Cody, who wasn't officially a starter at the time) and the average was 6'2" 325lbs.

Kenrick Ellis was my pet cat last year and he had similar dimensions to Poe at 6'5" 346lbs, I wanted him as a DE, not a NT.

They really should.
