We are what we are... Mediocre

No doubt about it. I don't know if we would be 6-2 right now but I clearly feel we should be 5-3 today.

Agreed. I'll repeat a point that was made a few weeks ago.

In my experience when you have a leader that places so much emphasis on "not making mistakes," it actually brings about the unintended consequences of having the team act less aggressively, and actually committing more mistakes because that is all they think about.

How many press conferences have you heard where Purcells blames a loss on mistakes or turnovers? I know all coaches do this, but ours seems to do it much more frequently.

In fact, you may have even heard him throw out stats in the PCs about how many mental errors a particular player has in a game or practice. He actually charts this (and I'm sure he has the assistants point all this out to the players).

It's the "don't look down" effect. If you're teaching someone how to walk a tightrope, you stress balance, technique, vision, etc. But if all the student hears every day most prominently in the message is "don't look down" ... you all know what will happen. The student will step out on that tightrope tentatively, and even if (s)he gets across successfully, (s)he will start off slowly, and be thinking more about not looking down than actually getting to the other side. Sound like our team? Have we been starting our games slowly & tentatively?

I am part of the collective chorus on the boards who think we have plenty of talent on this team. I'm almost to the point where I'm embracing the idea that we've finally found an answer at QB.

However, I still have the sneaking suspicion that as talented as they are, this team continues to "look down" ... even though they have been repeatedly told not to.

I just hope that we can find a linebacker or tightend at that spot. That is what we need at this point.

Yes, we certainaly don't need a Safety or any OL help.
