it's because when players are still relatively young, and once highly thought of, we're inclined to give them a chance to see if they can fulfill they're potential and help us win, it goes on in the league all the time

Just remember what Bill said last year, that when a player is drafted that high he was once highly regarded. It is always possible that the player didn't get the right coaching and it's always a good idea to give them a second chance.

It's like shopping in the scratch and dent aisle. :D

Cuz Jerry Jones thinks he can do something that the rest of the league can't.

i know. but i though about this with the harrington thread. jerry is always on the lookout for the bargains. some of them have turned out very good for us in the past.

I think it's more of a low-risk, potentially great reward strategy Jerry is using, I mean, why give up much for somebody when noone else is, and if he could potentially help you win games?

I don't mind it. You might find a diamond in the rough. If not, you move on. The key is not counting on those players to play huge roles for you. That was the bigger mistake that Dallas has made in the past.

Deion Sanders, Eddie George, Drew Bledsoe and Aaron Glenn were first round busts? I must have missed a decade of football.

I don't understand the point. Yes occasionally we'll take a flyer on a bust, or pick up a good player that happened to be a first rounder. But it's not like we show a first round player preference over better players. If that was the case we'd be pursuing Eric Moulds not Terrell Owens. Or Lavar Arrington instead of Akin Ayodele. It's inevitable that a few free agents, high profile or otherwise, that we pick up would be 1st round picks. In fact last year's FA haul only had Bledsoe (which was relativly low profile), and this year's FA haul lacked a 1st rounder at all. I really don't see a preference.

You consider:

tony casillas
deion sanders
george teague
Joey Galloway
Kevin Hardy
Eddie George
Terry Glenn
Vinny Testaverde
Keyshawn Johnson
Drew Bledsoe
Aaron Glenn

... all first round busts?

Man, you've got some strict criterion!

He can. He can bounce a marble off his cheek and have it go over the goal post. What other owner/GM has face skin that tight?

well not all of them were busts. that's why i put "or otherwise" in the title.

in the list you quoted, only deion sanders and maybe aaron glenn hadn't worn out their welcome at their teams when the cowboys signed them. the rest of them we got em on the cheap.

Some of those guys we took a chance on because they were guys we could bring in at a cheap price and did not have the cap space to look at quality players.

I am not a real fan of Harrington, but Jerry should be searching the scrap heap for a QB right now.

Bledsoe probably has a couple of years left. If you can find someone to groom/develop behind him, it makes your life a lot easier.

I expect someone will give him some money though and I wouldn't want to pay him much.
