Ryan Travis had already established himself as one of the top players in NCAA Division II after his junior season in 2009 at West Liberty State University. The former Tuslaw Mustang standout was named to four different All-America teams following that season, including a spot on the prestigious Little All-America team.
That raised the bar substantially for the 6-foot-3, 235-pound tight end coming into his senior season in 2010. Then again, it proved to be a bar that Travis was able to clear with relative ease.
On Thursday, Travis was named for the second straight year to The Associated Press’ Little All-America first team. That came one day after the senior became West Liberty’s first American Football Coaches Association Division II All-America selection.
“What they (the accolades) really mean, if you put it all together, is it just shows what kind of team we had,” Travis said Thursday evening. “We had a lot of accolades last year, and we knew we had a huge target on our backs. We just went out and did it.”
As a junior, Travis had 104 catches for 1,250 yards and 14 receiving touchdowns. But as a senior, he went out and more than exceeded those lofty numbers.
In his final season at West Liberty, he caught a nation’s-best 126 passes – which is second-best all-time for a single season in Division II – for 1,402 yards and 15 touchdowns. The 140.2 yards per game also was best in Division II this season, while his 12.6 catches per game marks the second-best total all-time for a single season in Division II history.
