West Virginia University will retire alum and football great Chuck Howley's jersey (#66) on November 4 during the BYU game at WVU. Howley will be one of only 4 mountaineer football players with a number retired.
Roger Staubach called Howley "a fantastic linebacker, one of the greatest. He could do everything." Howley played for the Cowboys from 1961-73.
Howley was a rare 5-sport letterman at WVU.

I thought that was already done. Sometimes never too late is too late.

Howley was the best Linebacker in WVU history, Dallas Cowboys history, and one of the best in NFL history. Considering he came back from what was then career ending knee surgery to be a HOF LB is special and not common. It shows you what kind of man and what kind of athlete was the original #54.

He is a member of WVU's inaugural 1991 WVU Sports Hall of Fame class, joining the likes of Sam Huff, Ira Rodgers and Jerry West in that famous first class. He is also an inaugural member of the Mountaineer Legends Society, which began in 2016, and was also enshrined in the famous Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor in 1977.

Odd they didnt retire his number in 1991 when he was part of the West Virginia initial sports hall of fame class.

I think the folks at West Virginia U. might have thought about your "never too late is too late" idea. Chuck's age, his infirmity and the August NFL Hall induction has to be a factor, or the factor in retiring his #66 right now. Interestingly, Howley and Sam Huff played in the same NFL era, and WVU retired LB Sam Huff's jersey in 2005.
It's nice they're honoring Chuck Howley. But he retired from football in 1973. So yeah, never too late is still late.

2005, that is just crazy. Now we honor ex RBs while they still are playing for another team.

Same as you guys, ....what the heck took them so long to retire his number?... Not like they have so many superstars coming out of WVU... oh well, he is 87 and at least can still attend this ceremony himself. Shame on those jive arse turkeys....

He couldn't attend his HOF induction so I doubt he makes this, either. Chuck's in a bad way with dementia and more.

Terrible that these two honors came so late he couldn't enjoy them.
